:o Unusual and fascinating idea!

lol lol  Zouaves fighting against samurais would be an interesting sight indeed...

I think zouaves didn't but definitely french troops engaged Chosu samurai in battle during the Shimonoseki Straits crisis

Got the first unit of Americans done (with help from Flags of War for the flags). Going to use Canadians from the Perry BIF range for the regular troops.

Looking great, wish I hadn't sold mine off 😁

I’ve got a few to add to them to make it a full battalion  :)

:o I must say I didn't know about these events.

I just had a look at Gallica (French National Library website) and they have an engraving from Le Monde Illustré (made from a picture from Nadar) showing Japanese ambassadors in Paris in May 1864. It says that one of the ambassadors put on a Japanese war armour because they understood that the French public would like to see it.

Check it on Wikipedia. You have two main samurai vs westerners confrontations :

- The aforementioned Shimonoseki Straits crisis (France, Britain, the Netherlands and USA against Chosu clan)
- The British bombardment of Kagoshima

Aside from that, several french advisors joined the shogunate army during the Boshin War. A Spanish and several Russian war vessel also called port during that time but they were on far more friendly terms

This project is a 'what if'. If you want to discuss the actuality of the situation the it would best to start your own thread where you can talk about it  :)
