WOTR Banners & Flag and when to use which

Can someone shed some light on when a banner was used versus a flag in a unit.  I have noticed flags and banners on both infantry and cavalry and just want to use them correctly as I am building my forces for Never Mind The Billhooks.  Thanks in advance for any advice, etc.
