Star Mogul, Ruins of an Empire
« on: August 28, 2009, 05:51:15 PM »
Hi!

Im taking a break from fantasy gaming as painting loads of Leviathan stuff has taxed my patience to breaking point!

I had a look through my wargames collection to see what old sci-fi games I had and turned up my copy of Star Mogul.

The game itself has an interesting setting pitting salvage teams against each other and an assortment of alien and rogue AI races and the main aim of the game isnt always to shoot up the opponent.

Having re-read the book I fancied giving it a try and handily the forum for the game itself is still active (if somewhat quiet) and are wondering what can be done to increase interest in the game.

I have decided to collect up a small salvage team or two (the joy of it being a skirmish game means I dont need to buy loads of miniatures, just 10-12 infantry and a vehicle or two!)

Ive started a new blog up to chronicle my efforts:

http://farpointsalvage.blogspot.com/

Heres a link to the range and indeed its somewhat quiet forum:

http://www.alphaforgegames.com/starmogul.html

Any suggestions as to possible miniatures for asteroid miners, salvage crews, mining machines, ramshackle vehicles and rusty robots would be most welcome!

All the best!

Hi!

Heres the first of my gangers:

Wee Rab

Hes originally a D&D Chainmail Gnome but has painted up nicely as a somewhat unusual ganger!

Go thrakk, go! That is a serious salvage ape! And I love what he has done with his armour. Lovely turquoise.

I'm glad that they decided to release their rules as PDF. Last time I visited Alpha Forge, Star Mogul was listed as Print Only...
I like the idea of that kind of campaign game. Do you get to build stuff out of what you salvage, or just buy more cool tools & weapons with your profits?

Hi!

You use the salvage to purchase new crew and equipment but the X12 android cult in the second supplement have a foundry bot (essentially a walking factory) which can consume scenery and salvage on the battlefield to create more junk bots.

I really like the idea of using the salvage to create new stuff for regular salvage crews though! It may be worth coming up with some home brew rules!

Ive also managed to play a quick game using some 15mm scale miniatures which turned out quite well:

Heres a quick pic of the droids my salvage team used in the 15mm scale game:

Eventually I will have some salvage crews for both scales!

Does the Foundry Bot keep raising prices, reducing the contents of each package, and charge exorbitant amounts to deliver its wares?

(Sorry, just kidding.) Love those cute little salvage robots.

Hi!

Heres a quick pic of a salvage droid Ive just finished:

HARRY

I used an article on painting rust from the Ramshackle games website to get his rather beaten up finish and was a bit worried that I had ruined the miniature as I painted him but the end results are quite effective!

(The Foundry bot does enjoy charging huge amounts for postage and packaging while reducing the contents of the packaging almost to a single figure!)

Hi!

Thanks for the comments!

Alas I am having difficulty finding anyone in the UK who still stocks the miniatures! Ive tried Cavalier but theyve none left in stock and theres no reply from Gamers Quest so far!

Still theres plenty of proxies for all the stuff needed apart from the Hydrissians and Mephalians. I may yet place an order direct with Alpha Forge but dont want to get hit with import duties!

Ive spotted a load of mechwarrior plastic mechs to convert to asteroid miners and medium sized mechs and theres a host of cheap plastic Starwars miniatures which can easily be converted!

All the best!
