Flight stands for 1/72 aircraft?
« on: February 17, 2021, 01:11:46 PM »
Does anyone have recommendations for flight stands for 1 /72 planes? I've seen the Green Stuff World and Debris of War ones, and they look great, but they seem to only be for 1/100 planes. Are there any on the market that could support 1/72 planes or would the 1/100 ones be good enough? The plane I'm building is a Polikarpov I-16, so it's no very big.
Thanks  :)

Depends on what you want it for.  To support a 1/72 scale plane it needs to be pretty beefy and stable at the base.  I have seen people use plastic wine flutes and glasses for a working clear stand.  Then there is an adjustable flight stand with a magnetic top here:

Benefit would be that you could hide the magnet internally.
There is also a DIY telescopic flightstand here:

Hope that helps.

Edit:  Forgot the old Mustangs and Messerschmitts flying base.

I modified their flying stand to use with a scenic base on my Eldar some time ago:

Just another option.

I made two different types, one is a simple magnetic telescopic tool for fighters on a hexagonal timber base that also works for my ww1 canvas Eagles game, the second is for bombers and parachute aircraft which is a clear rod. I am also towing with the idea of a bracket that mounts on my table edge and swings over the table.

My canvas eagle bases are quite thick mdf, I have since added flock to them

Not that long ago I had the very same problem, getting a stand for my 1/72 planes for 28mm wargames.

The one criteria I had set was that the plane was at least 500mmm high up in the air, so it would easily be above any of the buildings. As at that height everything wobbles like crazy I came to use at least a 5mm acrylic rod. Anything thinner did bend too much under the weight of the planes, and anything thicker made it impossible to put into smaller planes like the PO- 2.
The base itself is a standard GW 65mm base, that is by now more metal washer and greenstuff then anything else and clocks in at 120g.
The bigger and the heavier the better, but I did not want to take up unnecessary much place on the board and felt that with that base the stand was pretty solid. It will not do well during a earthquake, but so far it has not let me down.

As for the plane, I filled up the part where I wanted to attach the rod with greenstuff and drilled a hole into it, and placing a small piece of metal at the bottom of that hole. Getting ~8mm of the rod into it, with a small magnet attached just for that little extra snap fit.

I made mine from telescopic rods with magnets on the end (for picking up screws and the like) stuck into thick MDF hexagons. The rods have 7 segments, so that gives you 7 altitude levels. Planes have a dome headed bolt in the base so you can adjust their angle

If the goal is to use the aircraft for strafing in a ground game, consider the use of a tripod that will have less impact on the table than a single base that is heavy/stable enough to support the model.
