Love the idea of 3d printed socketed bases to get different heights. Why not make your 3D printed bases have space for a washer & get the best of both worlds?

I did consider that, but I don't have any washers with a big enough hole to accommodate a socket that would have sufficient strength to stand up to ham-fisted gamer use.

I did something like this with some 50mm flying bases I modelled and printed for drones in 28mm platoon games. The base is 2mm thick with a cut-out in the center for a 25mm fender washer. I then have a 2mm thick disc (with a holder for acrylic rod) glued on top of that. This way, the base gets a little extra weight from the washer and it's magnetic for storage purposes.
