Leather guns at Killiecrankie question
« on: March 22, 2021, 06:09:05 PM »
At the Battle of Killierankie General McKay’s army fielded two leather guns.  They didn’t accomplish much.

One Highlander took a ball from one of them on his targe and was bowled over  He was up again in moments and ready for action.  I presume it was a shot at extreme range all the same.

I’ve been thinking about these guns and I’m coming to the conclusion that they may have been Frame Guns.  Frame guns would be easier to transport given the state or absence of the roads and the demanding terrain. Can anyone add any further info’ or confirm this?

They were leather guns built by Wemyss in 1650-51. There were 3 of them in Edinburgh castle and they were taken from there, seemingly more to prevent the Jacobites getting them. Each were carried with it's carriage on a horse. Not pulled by it but on top of it so they must have been pretty small. They were technically not 'frames' but personally I think the difference is irrelevant to us as gamers.

They were fired, I would guess at longish range for these guns but that would actually be a short range really, in an attempt to provoke the Jacobites to attack. They were a total failure and all broke after 3 shots.

I suspect you are probably right.
