BSC2021 AKULA’s a Feast for Crows
« on: April 06, 2021, 02:18:30 PM »
I’m going literal on Hammer’s example of “dead mans land”  :D

The theme of this years BSC should be interpreted as including all sorts of terrain pieces which can be used to define an area of difficult terrain on your game board. Some examples are (but not limited to) bogs, quicksand, minefields, asteroid belts, shallows, dense woods, scrap yards, "dead mans land"...

The detritus left after a battle could certainly slow movement...piles of corpses, dead horses, discarded weapons and armour...wouldn’t necessarily prevent movement, but would certainly slow down an advance, forcing cavalry to slow to a walk, or even dismount rather than risk injury to their mount. While foot soldiers would be at less risk of injury, their progress would be slowed, even their formation disrupted, as men broke ranks seeing a chance for a bit of looting.

This painting by Donato Giancola captures the feel for me perfectly.

The following is a (much smaller) base that I completed a while back for my Game of Thrones project, which should give you a bit of a feel for what I have in mind....

Given the limits in commercial items, I’ll need to make the vast majority of the corpses/gear myself...themed for Game of Thrones (naturally).

Getting excited & making jokes about dropping Nepalm on little Asian Children in a Viet' village doesn't make it ok just because 'it's wargaming & not real'. You wanker scum need to look again at the real photographic horror of such chemical weapons. Seriously Disgusting mind set amongst some you.

I hope you haven’t picked The Battle of the Bastards for your inspiration; that’s an awful lot of bodies to sort out  lol
cheers

All good points, but as “Winter is Coming” I’ll just cover everything in snow   :D

To make bodies you could use the Perry plastic medieval sets as I did here -

That’s the plan. Mindful though of the limitations on use of commercial items, so I’ll be sculpting some bits as well.

Does everybody read 'Winter is Coming' in a Northern accent or is that me just being weird? lol

I’ve made a small test piece today - easier to play about with the green stuff while it’s on a smaller base, but I’d envisage 3 or 4 of these “components” on each actual base, with some space in between for figures to move through the terrain.

Making the components separately also means I can swop them around for now as I try to work out what looks the best on each base.

I’ve used a few bits from a Perry sprue, with the core made from milliput, but the plan is to green stuff as much as possible, with the somewhat limiting factor that I can’t sculpt to save my life  lol

A bunch of mdf turned up today from warbases, so I’ve currently got plans for 4 bases (the smaller ones are 15cm x 15cm, and the larger ones are 15cm x 20cm).

Of course that would mean up to 16 component parts, so I’ll see how I get on.

Yep; Battle of the Bastards alright...  :D

That's some ambitious project you picked, but eminently suitable I might add.

This certainly is a great start. Will this remain a test piece, of will you incorporate it into the larger whole?

Oh, and better stock up on that Tamiya Clear Red...  :P
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Wow! Great start and green stuff work! That really conveys feeling.
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.
