Will the rolled paper trunks be strong enough once the glue dries?

Just thinking of possibly getting squashed if stored?

Thanks everyone!
@ AKULA I have used this technique now for over 10 years and have never had a problem with the rolled paper crushing. They are fairly rigid because I roll them tight. However, rough treatment would certainly damage them. Think of them of having slightly greater strength than balsa.

Some more progress.

I have put together the banana patch and cut the base footprint into the cork. The patch will receive some more glue and the leaves will be reshaped after that and then, of course, the painting. The pandanus trees start next.

This is the last update I can make before I get into spackling and painting. The last scratch built tree, a pandanus, is completed. I have put the first coat on the deciduous trees but I don't think that showing them is verboten at this point as they are nowhere near finished. There will be bamboo toward the center of the piece but I will drill them in after they are completely painted. Three views:

Thank you AKULA and Helen.  I have completed painting on all of the trees but the pandanus, which has not been started. This morning I finished spackling the base and glued down sand. The toothpicks are just placeholders for the bamboo. I have already drilled into the base to seat them but needed to keep the spackle and base coating from closing the holes. The spackling gives the base more heft, eliminates flexibility (and future cracking), and creates a more paintable surface.

Now it is just a waiting period for the spackle to harden and for a break in the rain so that I can spray everything a flat black.

It is looking pretty good at this point.  Can't wait to see it done.

What a great way to scratch-build your own trees! I look forward to seeing the finished product in all of its jungle glory...  :-*
