Robin Hood vs The Sheriff model suggestions
« on: 10 April 2021, 02:17:49 PM »
I’ve recently acquired the great Lion Rampart rules and as a fan of the Robin Hood mythos, I’m interested in putting together something using the suggested retinue builds in the book. I’ll probably run it more not-Robin Hood so I can take a few of my own liberties with some of the models, but I’m inspired by the Robin of Sherwood show.

Anyway, any suggestions for The Merry Men Archers or more importantly The Sheriff’s Mounted and Foot Serjeants?

depends on which incarnation of RH you go for.
Some of us would possibly opt for the Errol Flynn version or Richard Green.

Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Lion Rampant is a good set, but may not be the best for recreating "derring-do" adventures.   In the stories,
Robin and his men are very much individuals, as are the Sheriff, Guy and Prince John.  Pig Wars, and the Robin Hood set from Pulpactionlibrary both give you a chance to give each character individual traits.  LR relies on
groups of figures of a particular type.
Of course, LR can handle a bigger game, but my experience with PW suggests that a player can handle up to 20 figures without issue.

I'd recommend Fistful of Lead core rules, we've played quite a few medieval skirmishes using them and their trait mechanism is perfect for characterising Robin Hood and others.

Plenty of AARs here on the LAF, including this one https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=121380.0

I appreciate the rules suggestions, but the intent of this thread is model selection.

Anyone have any good ideas on models?

Conquest Games has an entire model range devoted to Robin Hood and his adversaries.

http://www.conquest-games.co.uk/index.php?cPath=31

Wargames Foundry and Footsore Miniatures have small Robin Hood lines.  They also sells Normans and other relevant period minis.

Warlord Games, Mirlton Miniatures, Studio Miniatures, and Old Glory Miniatures each have small collections.

Sorry, misread the OP.

I use the GW 'Bertrand the Brigand' set for my Robin, John and Tuck - they come up on eBay now and again

Front Rank have some very serviceable archers and other medievals https://www.frontrank.com/product-category/medieval/hundred-years-war/hyw-infantry/

Footsore Baron's wars has a very nice Robin, Marion etc.  as others have mentioned

A Robin Hood-themed Kickstarter just ended:

Some nice miniatures there.  You might be able to late back, if you are interested.

I have all the Conquest Games Robin Hood figures, they are based on the Robin of Sherwood series, they are lovely figures and really capture the spirit of that version of the legend.

Jack I've started reading a book called Outlaw by Angus Donald. Its part of a series told by Alan Dale. Obviously fiction but gives a breakdown of Robin's gang which includes archers and M at A. It also gives  some uniform detail. Robin has a grey/black wolf head on a white background and the Sheriff (Murdac) has red chevron on a black background. I intend to use these details as the basis for my RH from the Footsore kickstarter.

Frank

There are also the former Rogue Miniatures ones now sold by Miniaturefigurines/Matchlock miniatures which were very influenced by Robin of Sherwood.
