bsc2021 cahrn difficult terrain
« on: April 13, 2021, 07:02:19 PM »
I'm looking forward to taking part in this year's Build Something contest. For now I'm just making this as a placeholder while I consider what I want to build. I have a couple ideas I'm kicking around but nothing concrete yet. I'll update the thread as appropriate when I figure things out.

I haven't (completely) forgotten about the BSC. I got very busy in May and progress has been slow on my build. I haven't got around to posting about it but I'm nearing completion just ahead of the deadline this weekend. I will provide some in progress pictures of my build soon enough. I'm looking forward to seeing what the other entrants have done!

Cahrn - same thing happened to my project who would have thought May would fly by!

Looking forwards to seeing your entry!

Indeed. I wrapped up two pieces today, which I will refrain from posting. I decided to make some bocage/hedgerows after mulling the possibilities for a while. Not exactly the most "difficult" of difficult terrain, but it's definitely difficult to traverse. I want to try to keep things playable and useful for a variety of systems and eras.

Real life took over a bit in May and I spent my available hobby time mostly working on some other projects.
Here's an in progress picture of the bases I made. Time permitting I would like to build more.

Thanks all. Given the extended due date I’m going to be able to knock out another piece or two before all is said and done. I know we’re not to show completed pictures until the competition is over but I’ll try to add some more pictures to this thread as appropriate in the coming days.

Getting excited & making jokes about dropping Nepalm on little Asian Children in a Viet' village doesn't make it ok just because 'it's wargaming & not real'. You wanker scum need to look again at the real photographic horror of such chemical weapons. Seriously Disgusting mind set amongst some you.

Thanks Clach Umha. I used to be able to get off cuts of plastic board from my local plastic dealer to base my terrain on but I haven't been able to do that for a couple of years. Now I just buy the occasional 4'x4' sheet of 1/16th inch styrene sheet for about $30 for my basing needs. The basic form is built up with some scraps of 1" insulation foam and smoothed out with some of the modelling compound from Geek Gaming Scenics (nothing special about the GGS stuff, I just happened to have a bag at hand when I started this project). In some areas I added AK Terrain mud effect for some finer texture. I make the wicker fence with wooden matchstick posts and floral wire ties. It's super easy and produces a good enough result for gaming terrain. Here are two pictures: one is the next section of bocage I'm making for BSC I've yet to prime and paint, and the other is some more wicker fencing I built a couple years ago.

I'm sure my plastic dealer still has their scrap bin, but when I went to pick up some supplies about a year ago access to the interior of their store was restricted per local public health guidelines. Sometimes they'd charge me for scraps in the past, sometimes not, but never more than a couple bucks. As for the modelling compound to the best of my knowledge it is basically a paper pulp and plaster mixture. It dries enough to retain its form fairly quickly but I usually leave a piece out in the sun for several hours to help the process along. Depending on how wet you prefer to mix the compound I'd say a 1cm layer would give you about 20-30 minutes of working time before it firmed up and after a couple hours it might be dry enough to work on top of without major issue.

Right now I'm messing around with making a couple of wire tree armatures to go on these pieces, however they're not really turning out the way I want them to. I probably won't end up using them for this project. Thanks again for the kind words Clach Umha. I hope you enjoy the final product.

And here's my corner piece with some brown base color on it, plus a little drybrushing to bring out some visual interest. It seems a bit dark compared to the other pieces I've already finished, so it might need another lighter brown coat to bring everything together.
