Wonderful work! An inspirational project.

Re civilians there are a few Oriental Civilians in the Scotia Grendel "Tales of the Dragon Kings" Fantasy range that may be useful.

Cheers

Fantastic looking KNIL and project.

What colours did you use for the uniform? That green is something else.

Thanks for all the comments, as per usual!

What colours did you use for the uniform? That green is something else.

It's taken a while to get the recipe "right", so there have been a few iterations since I started.
I often find people either make them too green or too dark.

My recipe is:
  • White Primer
  • Base coat of Army Green (The Army Painter - Warpaints)
  • Full coat of Plaguebearer Flesh (Citadel Contrast)
  • Highlight of 60/40 Army Green (Warpaints) & Camo Green (Citadel)
  • Final Highlight of Camo Green Citadel)

I think the most important step is the contrast paint, which changes the 'tone' of the Army Green basecoat into the KNIL Green you see in the pictures.

"Austrian Sailors", according to the OG web site.

The very nicely painted sailors look like Old Glory figures from their Boxer Rebellion range. Possibly German sailors by the cap design.

Thank you both - I will certainly be buying some more in the future!

You mentioned in a recent post about heavier weathering on the buildings and as I was reading through all the pages and buildings you'd completed that thought occupied to me as well. However looking at the pictures of the town as a unit in my opinion it all comes together as a stylistic whole.
It may not be hyper realistic but it does look bloody gorgeous.

You are very kind - I am very slowly adding just a bit more weathering every so often. It's so easy to over-weather, so I am going bit by bit until I'm happy.

Re civilians there are a few Oriental Civilians in the Scotia Grendel "Tales of the Dragon Kings" Fantasy range that may be useful.

As for civilians, what about some American West civvies?  I know that's a few years before your timeframe, but some of them would work in the warmer climes.

Thanks for all the suggestions gents!

Best,
Shtim

Nice idea and brilliantly executed. Nice to see our Dutch/Dutch Indies history come to life on the tabletop  :).

I would be keen to know what colours you used for the KNIL vehicles.

As LAF have only just started posting Topics that were/are of interest, I have had the joy of reading through several pages of posts including yours, a thread I have long enjoyed. Thanks you.

Hello all!

I am pleased to share another update for my yet-to-be-named 1920's colonial Dutch Indies town.

I've been working on expanding the commercial district and have finished another building; this time for a street corner.
The Midden-Java Sigarenmagazijn ("Middle-Java Cigar Emporium") is the place to go for cigars and cigar related items!

As per usual the build was scratch built and designed by me, although the core of the building was cut out of MDF wood using my new lasercutter.
I am particularly happy with the window frames and signage.

I will probably be adding more clutter at the back, namely a load of bikes (we are talking about the Dutch Indies after all! lol). This is the first of my buildings where I added proper detailing on the back - the addition of a back door, patio, plants, etc. really adds to the realism and I will likely continue to do this for all of my builds going forward.

The pillars for the fence at the back are from our friend Oshiro Models, with the iron fence cut using my laser cutter.
The sewage piping at the back of the build was purchased from Crooked Dice.

The star of the show for me, although hidden in the background, are the trees.
I bit the bullet and bought a load from 'Thanan Dioramas Exporter' on Ebay. They're not cheap and need to get sent from Thailand, but the quality is simply fantastic.
The trees that Thanan produce are probably some of the best in the business.

As always, comments and feedback are welcome!

I would be keen to know what colours you used for the KNIL vehicles.

Thank you for your kind words. Apologies for my delay in reply - The vehicles use US Olive Drab from Vallejo with streaking grime from AK interactive.

Best,
Shtim

That Magazijn looks like a good place to be! I would spend a few hours around there, even if it's only to see what happens in the streest around it... :D

Wow!

That cigar shop is amazing! :-* :-* :-* :-*

On the basis of the Indonesian cigarettes I've tried, I'm not sure I would buy their cigars but it's an impressive looking establishment.

Shtim, thanks for the reply, no probs with it being tardy. Perhaps it should be called Desa/Cota Shtim or ShtimKarta?

Tempo doeloe  :-*

The entire project is just downright fantastic, and bar some more dust and grime, could almost be actual pictures of Batavia, Buitenzorg or Kota Radja.

Hats off to you, sir, for creating this wonderful cityscape...
