ACW in 15mm

Inspired by some of the nice ACW stuff here I thought I’d resurrect my own 15mm project.  There’s probably a blog post in where I initially went wrong.

Anyhow, here is my first Confederate Brigade Army of North Virginia.  The figures are from QRF and the flags from Warflag.

I’ll post more here as I go.  As usual I’ll do both sides.

Should you decide to get any Battle Honours figures, I like the skirmishing poses best. Good, dynamic, no fiddly bayonets to break off. The running drummer has weak ankles, suggest bolstering them with crazy glue or the like.

Interesting you should say that.  I have a load of Battle Honours figures and they are lovely figures.  Too big to match the ones above though.  I think I might be able to use the cavalry but not the horse holders etc.

Most of our ACW is Battle Honours. But in Napoleonic I use 15mm and 18mm all together, just don't mix them in the same units. I often see real people who look like different sculptors made them.

Sometimes that works for me.  Not with this one though.  My first Union Brigade is coming along nicely.  Meantime I have a blog post on my ACW project if it's of interest.

Nicely painted both sides, North & South.

The QRF Rebs look to have a better "animation" about them. The Union look very "stiff"

Yes, those are the USA Regulars and I think the stiff pose is intentional.  Most of the range is very animated which I like.

As ACW ranges go it is a comprehensive one.  There is an issue with sizing with some of the packs being smaller than others.  Oddly, this bears no relation to when they were added to the range.

I came across an interesting tidbit the other day.  According to Stillwell who fought throughout the war on the Union side German soldiers always kept their backpacks.  Others happily used the blanket roll but not soldiers of German origin.  I had wondered about the rationale for mixing troops with and without packbacks in the same unit.  Now I have one.

On backpacks: one thing we never do in our games is leave troops to guard the baggage. During Grant's Overland Campaign, trained but green heavy artillery regiments from the defenses of Washington were pressed into service as infantry. One such regiment dropped their packs and went into battle. After a tough fight, they returned to find veteran Union troops had rifled their packs and taken whatever goodies they wanted.

Pocking about in my ACW lead pile I realised that I have quite a lot of zouaves.  Coming up shortly the Louisiana Tigers, 5th New York and the Fire Zouaves.  The figures are from the '80s but aren't bad at all.

Here are the 5th New York USA and the CSA's Louisiana Tigers.  The latter have a Peter Pig command group saving the drummer.  I reckon the rest of these  figures originated in the 1980s.
