9 types of gladiators
« on: 08 September 2009, 09:36:33 PM »
Munera sine misione...  :D

I have begun my Gladiator project in 28 mm miniature
The goal is to illustrate some gladiator styles (retiarius, thracian, murmillo, etc...), references and some play events.

All data are collected on my site :  http://peinturefigurine.free.fr

Here, you have an example of the Hoplomachus with his weapons :

For each one, you will find the paint used, the origin and the most known "items".

If you like this kind of project, tell me your feeling, the rules or the figures you know.

That's a really nice paintjob.  However, it's completely ruined by the base, in part because the base kind of overwhelms the figure.

i must concur: the base has too much shi...stuph on it.  i note on the webpae that they are mounted on coins.  perhaps if you mix up some greenstuff or brownstuff and smooth the integral base of figure to the coin and then a slim coat of white glues and dust with a fine sand, finest you can get.

I see what you mean when you give me some advices on the base, I have to work on it...

Here, you have an example of the Retiarius with his weapons, one of the most known gladiator, the "fisherman" :

You will some more information on the site : http://peinturefigurine.free.fr.

The base of the retiarius has been done again. (The hoplomachs will be done again soon).

Thank you for your advices.

Much better now, but the grains are rather large. The succubus´ base shows what you can achieve with finest sand from seaside beaches (possibly available for birds from pet stores as well):

Awesome paintwork, but that succubus has a much better base than the gladiators.

The hoplomachus looks like he's walking through a flood of semolina, and although the retiarus looks better, he looks like he's walking on cobblestones.

A friend once advised that the best way to judge your figures is to take a friend to the beach, preferably dressed in the same style as the figure you are painting (perhaps not with the succubus, you'd get arrested) but at least in the same colours, so for your gladiator someone in shorts and sandals perhaps, then look at them from about 40 or 50 metres away (possibly take a photo) as then they would appear to be the same size as the figure you are painting.
It's not a technique that I have tried myself - my painting is mediocre at best so I know it won't look anything like.

Hey Figouze nice looking figures and a very nice project. OK, I agree that the size of the basing material is a bit too large... just switch to a finer sand... no problem.  Apart from that they are very nicely painted figures.

The first figure was based on a coin and the second on a slotta base.... IMO revert to coin basing.. it looks so much better :)

Thank you !

For the bases, I have bought some rounda bases. I would like to have a try with those and improve my bases...

For the others, lurking the Gargoyle and the girls, I'm not the painter, it is Michi, and I would love to paint like him  ::) His figures comes from reaper miniatures I think.

At the moment, following a poll on my web site, I'm going to paint the Murmillo type of gladiator : the Gallish one  :P ! ("Perditi homines aut barbari", nasty gladiators)

I try a new base with him, not just sand but earth flock. The hoplomachus is redone also.

The murmillo is in progress. All the stages are on the web site.
