Zanzibari Slavers
« on: September 09, 2009, 11:31:48 AM »
Hey folks,

to accompany the "hot phase" of the development of the T&T African Adventures supplement, I´ve decided to finally build up the colonial collection I´ve always wanted. Thanks to Lurch of Miniaturicum, I purchased a bunch of Zanzibaris, since I want to focus on East Africa in the 1860-1890 period. All figures from Wargames Foundry.

First, the remaining characters. The spear-wielding chap will become the artillery commander later on.

One squad with "veterans", all armed with rifles (and a shotgun for their leader).

"Common troops", the majority of which are all armed with muskets. One rifle and one shotgun per group, plus a leader.

Some pack mules, not for the Zanzibaris, but rather for Europeans - not suitable for Africa, but hey, T&T is pulp first and history second.

Hopefully, I´ll be able to take a trip to Nottingham on Sep.25 for the Foundry open day and purchase some more stuff, notably native bearers and the lovely Zanzibari gun.

I´ll upload my personal unit card samples later in the day, so you can get a glance at our first graphic concepts for the African supplement (as far as I know, a release date hasn´t been fixed yet, but we´re entering the "hot production" phase).

Very nice sruff.

Just for visual effect, buy a couple of Eureka's male and female captives to add to your forces (and maybe some pack camels).
Eureka can be found also here:

Thanks a lot! Now, this may sound terrible, but I had been looking for such figures (not exactly captive slaves, I´d actually prefer "native non-combatants" in other poses than bearers or civilian females). Since the Arabs are primarily planned as a "villain force" for Triumph and Tragedy, I hope you understand what I mean. Pulp and all that.

He (along with his two bodyguards) was the freebie figure if you bought all the Zanzibari packs in one go. They don't do those deals any more, so I have no idea how you get the various giveaway figures these days. There were loads of them, one set for each page in the Foundry DA section.

The pages have since been reorganised (with fewer figures in each pack, but occasionally they send you an old pack with the full quota), the freebies vanished at that time.

Ah crap. He would have made a nice addition to my own Slaver group.

Around 1999 (when the DA range was first released), the figure was available in the regular figure pack "Zanzibari Characters", going as "One-Eyed Abdul" at the time. The same pack is now sold as DA4/1, without the monkey chap, but including all the characters pictured above plus one with a whip (which is still on my workbench). Apparently, I got an old pack when I bought the figures from Miniaturicum. Lucky me, since this one is my absolute favourite and will become the Hero (or better, Villainous Caravan Leader) for any T&T games.

They look great - especially monkey man.

I've considered the Eureka slaves as well, very fitting I think for the Zanzibari!

Of course you are right, Chris. I bought all my DA a little later, when certain character figures had been separated out and given away as sweeteners to the bulk deals. So the current arrangement is the third reorganisation of the way they sell them (at the very least).

My Monkey Man is the captain (sometimes villainous, sometimes not) of a Dhow built by our very own Bugsda. I have a bunch of the Eureka slaves, which will be used as baggage elements (as it were) for my Arab slavers and my Nyamwezi warlord's Ruga Ruga.

I'd recommend taking a look at Eureka's plantation worker sets, too. They have a dozen or so male and female characters wielding various tools, carrying packs etc. Their clothing is generic enough to fit most eras and they add a nice touch to Westernized settlements or African dockyards.

I'm sure if you email Bernard at Foundry he'll sort something out. Maybe, if the postage is too high, we could club together for multiples of that monkey man figure?

If enough people are interested I don't mind being the middle man etc - that figure sure looks sweet!

Those are really very nice. Great detail and shading. I have most of these figures, prepped and primed, and ready to paint...just need more time...I have too many projects, and not enough time.

Awesome stuff, I like those miniatures. I am going to look silly for asking, but what is T and T?

Thanks!
