Science Fiction Jeeps and other lighter vehichles.
« on: June 14, 2021, 04:45:06 AM »
Hi everyone. I am looking around for SciFi "jeeps", scout cars, and other light vehicles.  Primarily with a military feel, but civvie vehicles for adventurers could be interesting too.

There are several I quite like at Antenocitis Workshop in the "Governance of Technology (GoT) range: the Viper, the Warthog, the Meercat, and the warthog. (I keep wanting to put an apostrophe in "Antenocitis Workshop", I can hardly stand it).

https://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/product-category/got/

But they are always out of stock when I check on them.

I am familiar with the Ramshackle Games line.  Some nice stuff there, but it tends to be too, well, ramshackle for what I am looking for at the moment, although I do like the Degu Scout car.

https://shop.ramshacklegames.co.uk/home/195-degu-scout-car.html

Given the size of Gamesworkshop's 40K range, you would expect them to have more, but I only know of the Imperial Guard Taurox (which I consider to be one seriously ugly model) and the Gene-Stealer Cult's Achilles Ridgerunner, which is actually rather nice.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Taurox-Prime

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Genestealer-Cults-Achilles-Ridgerunner-2019

What other options are out there?  I have primarily been a collector of Fantasy miniatures, so I am not that familiar with the SciFi ranges.

Thanks,

-Michael

I really like the Nemesis from Clear Horizon
https://clearhorizonminiatures.com/shop/shop/28mm/vehicles/pre-order-28mm-nemesis-light-strike-vehicle/

Not really a gaming miniature ... and not sci-fi, exactly, but I think it looks sci-fi enough for me. The  JGSDF Light Armored Vehicle from Tamiya
https://www.tamiyausa.com/shop/148-military-miniature/jgsdf-light-armored-vehicle-3/none/

khurasan has a pretty big selection of 15mm vehicle option but their Polecat is available in 28mm and all of their models are beautiful.

Titan Forge has a few light vehicles that might suit your needs:
https://titan-forge.com/128-machines

Puppetswar has the brick APC
https://puppetswar.eu/models-and-bits-93/all-models/machines/taurus-apc-a-k-a-brick.html

Mantic's Mule is solid
https://www.manticgames.com/games/warpath/gcps-warpath/gcps-mule-transport/

Demonscape have a wide selection... they aren't my cup of tea... except for the Paladin but you might like them

Victoria Miniatures does a wheel conversion kit for the Taurox that turns it into a much better vehicle. There is a decent kit in there, just hidden by the triangular tracks.

Warlord Games has a couple of vehicles in the Jedge Dredd range, although not military.

Kore industries has quite a few - https://kore.ecwid.com/28mm-Heroic-Scale-Vehicles-c33153393. They're 3d printed, so you may want to check for print quality first.

Teamsterz toys are worth checking. I've had some success with them, but the scales are all over the place.

Not mentioned yet, so I'll suggest a look at Daemonscape's 25-28mm range, which were formerly mostly Ground Zero Games figs before he sold them the line.  They'd be small next to 30mm+ scale stuff like GW sells, but maybe something will appeal.  The Stargrave figs (for ex) are quite a bit less bloated and would work better with them, and of course Jon still sells the 25mm Stargrunt infantry at GZG.

Come to think of it, some of their Gates of Antares figs might suit as well, assuming grav or walker vehicles are okay.  They've got a pretty varied range of grav-bikes and small two-man skimmers, and the Ghar range has a load of small one-to-three man walkers.

Thanks, everyone - lots of nice options to consider!  I appreciate everyone’s contributions.

Plisken, I agree with you on the Nemesis – a very sharp vehicle.  I don’t think I have ever heard of Clearhorizen before; I will have to go through their website more fully at some point.  The Tamiya JGSDF also looks nice.  I have some French VABs I tricked out to make look more Imperial Guardy, and the JGSDF has that same look. How do 1/48 scale models work with 28 to 30mm figures?  I am not a hardcore scale person – my GW Imperial Guard troopers will be cheerfully shooting at their smaller Stargrave neighbors, and vice versa.  I also like the look of the Khurasan Polecat.  I have a few Titan-Forge Fantasy models, but I don’t think I had ever noticed they also had a Sci-Fi range.  Some interesting models there; my favorite may be the “Rapid Rescue Ambulance”.

https://titan-forge.com/3d-prints/382-test-3d-titan-forge.html

For the campaign I am sneaking up on, some civvie vehicles like an ambulance may be useful.  Puppetswar is another company where I picked up the odd fantasy figure through the years, but never looked at their Sci-Fi range.  That Taurus APC is distinct looking, and I like it.   I had forgotten Mantic’s mule – it is a good-looing model and quite affordable as well.  I think we have similar tastes, Plisken, since the Demonscape vehicles don’t fit the style I am looking for, but the Paladin is the closest.  If I do start working on collecting some civilian transports, the flatbed truck might be a good choice, as well.

http://www.daemonscape.com/contents/en-uk/p110.html

I had not seen the Bob Naismith line before – I really like both the “Assault jeip” and the “Overrunner Grunter” (“Grunter” is a great name of a light assault vehicle).  43 pieces!  I will have to screw my courage to the sticking place before tackling one (as I do primarily fantasy, I don’t have a lot of experience with vehicle models). But I really like it, so may try it after gaining a little more experience.

Codsticker, thanks for the etsy link. Some interesting vehicles there – and some nice terrain bits as well.   Going to have to be careful about scale, though – the model I picked out as my immediate favorite is apparently a much smaller scale than I am looking for (the price was the first clue...).  Going to have to peruse that site in a leisurely fashion.

zemjw, I completely agree that the Victoria Miniatures conversion kit for the Taurox is a significant improvement over the original.  I am a fan of VM and have a fair number of the company’s infantry who will be appreciating the new vehicles so they don’t have to hump everywhere.  I quite like the Kore HAWG support vehicle – thanks for bringing the company to my attention.

https://kore.ecwid.com/28mm-Heroic-Scale-HAWG-6x6-Support-Vehicle-p145692764

I will check out Warlord Games and see what they have.

The Teamsterz Toys website looks like it is going to be a pill to search, but I will keep them in mind since you say they have some potential models.  Scotia Grendel!  We have some of their fantasy terrain pieces, bought on a grand trip to the U.K. many years back.  I had no interest in their Sci-Fi models at the time and had quite forgotten about them.  Thanks.

AxolotlQuestions, thanks for the Mortian link.  I like all four of the wheeled vehicles you linked to, especially the Arkos small buggy.  It should go nicely with my GW Tallarn and Victoria Miniatures Desert Scorpions troops (if I can ever decide on a color scheme I like for their uniforms, that is!).

Chief Lackey Rich, thanks for the link.  I think I had seen those models before, back in Ground Zero days, but lost track of them. Some good civilian models there.  I have never paid much attention to the Gates of Antares line, but I will have a mooch.   Good suggestion.

Von Trinkenessen, that Bob Naismith line looks very strong.  Glad to hear it is new and hope it keeps expanding.  I like those vehicles, but I have to say some of the infantry figures are also tempting.

3Fingers2, good suggestion.  I have seen pictures of such conversions in days of yore, and they looked good.  I may have a land speeder or two unbuilt around here.  I am not sure if my modeling skills are up to it, though. The one land speeder I did assemble I remember having trouble with – did I mention I’m not very experienced with this sort of model?!  Although I have done several of the basic GW Imperial Guard tanks that went together with a minimum of cursing.

Again, thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I knew there were ranges and models I didn’t know about or had forgotten.  It has been a pleasant surprise to see how many of them there are.

-Michael

Interesting, williamb.  I don't know how paper models would mix with plastic and resin kits, but it would be interesting as an experiment.  Might be useful for some wrecks as terrain features, if nothing else.  And I do like the little tent thingie!
