Fistful of Fear of the Fallout Blade!!
« on: July 27, 2021, 05:42:37 PM »
Have a few Fallout miniatures now but have not got my head around the game yet, especially for solo play - it seems a bit crunchier than I like to be honest.

Hence I fancied a game where I could send out mutants, humans and others to battle solo with a Fallout aesthetic.

My favourite versus game is the Fistful of Lead series and I've played quite a few games of Galactic Heroes but I wanted solo rules with a rudimentary AI to play against.

I've tried a few systems solo and have liked bits of each; like many others I've cobbled the bits I like together to see how it plays.

Basically I'm using the stats/characters and rules of Fistful of Lead with the following to guide my opponents:

Activation priority for the opposition is via the clever opportunity/threat method used by tereydavi of this parish in his Cthulu game Fear of the Dark.

I've dropped card activation for a blind bag draw of different coloured dice with a white one (drawn twice) signifying end of round - this gives a great 'fog of war' as you might activate all, some or none each turn as might the oposition; this mechanism was lifted from the Blood on the Blade game.

For behaviours I've put together some flow charts; currently using aggressive ranged, cautious ranged, smart melee and dumb melee - may add others later.

Had 2 games today getting across the field to a deactivated mech that could be activated byb passing a hard (8+) task roll.

Lost the first and won the second game, both were very close.

Overall I'm very pleased.

Apologies for the old mobile phone pics.

Some good ideas there. I'd be interested in seeing pics of your flow charts.

Alliteration overload!  ;) I agree with Bullshot; the flow charts would be very interesting...

Here you go.

Please be aware I might have missed something that's not made itself obvious yet, also in melee the second turn may need to have common sense applied if your figure has lost (in FFOL they may need to use the second turn to try to stand).

I'm not fully sold on the 1-6 and 7-10 weightings in favour of the preferred behaviour choice - I may change it to 1-7 and 8-10 but it's early days.

Hope you can get some use from these.

Pics are public on flickr so easy to click through and zoom in if required.

I like those. I will be solo gaming with Fistful of Lead rules after I move house next month (at least until I establish local contacts). These will be very useful.

Without the card activation system, is it really Fistful of Lead? Have you tried the Wasteland Warriors supplement which has all the mutants and things? We also have a FREE solo test ruleset.

True it's not but most of it is taken from ffol, the stats, the traits, dice, movement and combat rules etc.

I've seen the Solo rules but have always loved the blind dice pull for solo games just as your card mechanism  is my favourite in versus games.

Wasteland Warriors is on my list.

The blind bag draw works very well for versus game too. It's also used in Mortal Gods, which is my current favorite ancients game.

So who makes the card buildings and boxes?    It's paper-fold terrain but .....   it really works for me.    Looks pretty good.    Woe betide those who will continue to use cut out pieces of felt and glossy house-painted hills!   Fie.....  FIE!!!!!!!    They now have NO EXCUSES!

The crates are from Dave Graffam, very cheap files to buy and I reinforce them with corrugated card so they're vey tough.

Buildings, excluding the home made towers are from either Genet or TommyGun - all free to download, here:
