"Although not confirmed, it would seem probable that Gutknecht held this rarely seen badge based on his World War I service with Generalmajor Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck's forces in German East Africa. This official pin-backed breast badge was established by the Reich Minister of Reconstruction in October 1921 and awarded on 22 March 1922 to all Germans who, during World War I and in the former German Colonies, were acting or serving on behalf of the Colonies. The badge featured an elephant in the center with the inscription "SÜDSEE * AFRIKA * KIAUTSCHOU" around the rim."
