Game suggestions needed!
« on: 01 October 2021, 07:23:22 PM »
I’m planning a weekend away with 4 chums who are non wargames (well one is an ex wargamer) but we share an interest in ancient history, and a couple of them have suggested a wargames theme to the weekend (hooray!) along with perhaps a bit of walking in the countryside and probably a few beers each evening. So I am seeking suggestions for wargames that could be played on a standard dining room table without the need for any (or many) figures.
Command and colours springs to mind, but what other games like this would be easy to learn fun to play, and perhaps take 60-90 minutes per game?

What about Pandemic: Fall of Rome ?

Not really a wargame per say but ancient themed.

Decline & Fall by WRG (If you have a copy)
Failing that play Fist Full of Lead Reloaded using
something like poker chips for figures. Added bonus
you'll have mates, poker chips & a pack of cards. ;)

One hour wargames, plenty of scenarios, simple to learn and play and just about enough flavour to keep your mates happy…or at least get them talking about why it didnt😂

Hi, I see that Wargames Vault sell the 1970s era "Micro Ancients" rules plus various expansion sets .Basically a set of rules plus cardboard counter troops .Pretty basic but cheap . Another option could be one of the Helion and Company "Paper Soldiers" books. Basically a set of rules plus full-colour paper/card soldiers. Roman vs Celt, Hastings of the Wars of the Roses to choose from. Both would be pretty lightweight.

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ve bought a digital copy of fistful of lead (the generic core rules) and they look great fun. I’ve also invested in a hard copy of Neil Thomas’ one hour wargames

Good choice with the FFofL.
May I suggest that you take some sticky (round) labels.
get players to draw (the face at least) of their character,
then stick it onto the Poker chip (If you are going down
that path.) As umpire/plumpire you can judge the best.
A silly little prize (packet of sweets) is a great motivator.

If someone in your lot has an experience as RPG game master and is willing to prepare a short scenario, Argad rules may work. Most AARs online are about large games on very large tables but the basic combat system is outrageously simple.
