Suggestions for Standards Please
« on: 21 December 2021, 10:24:01 PM »
I am working on two ECW armies. The Royalists to be commanded by prince Rupert and the Parliamentarians to be commanded by Lord Essex. I am wanting to put a standard on each command stand. But what standard should they be?

Amended - 15 MM scale

Appreciate anyone's thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks,

Terry

You didn't say what scale figures you are using. If 28mm Flags of War have Essex's own regiment flags plus numerous others

Always had excellent service

Hi Terry,

A great idea to have a flag on the command bases.  I echo Brunei’s recommendation for Flags of War - great flags and great service. GMB Designs also do a good range of ECW flags.

With ECW generals you have a choice of which flag to use as well.  Generals were often also colonels of regiments and so you could use one of these colours (e.g Rupert’s Regiment of Foot).  Essex and Rupert also had lifeguards, which would be a different flag to use, but sometimes harder to find what the flags were for these units. Generals were also meant to have a standard/flag themselves.  These are even harder to tie down, and we don’t know that they were always used in the ECW.

Good luck with you command bases 👍

Rupert had a 14' long banner which was captured at Edgehill (iirc). Nothing quite so fancy for Parliament I'm afraid, in fact apart from Charles and Rupert, commanders probably didn't have 'command' standards. (See here for Rupert and Fairfax https://www.keepyourpowderdry.co.uk/2018/09/command-figures.html )

Hasn't stopped me, as I'm in the same camp as you. We know many of the high ranking Parliament men's personal cavalry standards. I've utilised them for Fairfax and Cromwell. But not for Waller or Essex. No idea why though.

All my flags are from Maverick, so I know that Stuart has them ready to print if ask.

Gentlemen, My very sincere thanks for the replies. And your thoughts are just excellent!!! I will have to see about getting the banner for Rupert, but if not I'll go with his regimental flag. I am planning the same for Essex.

I have a good source for flags fairly close and like his work so am chatting with him, and will see if he has the ones I want.

Again, my very sincere thanks,

Terry

I have meant to explore the possibility of getting conjectural flags made for my command stands based on family colours but never got around to it. For example, using this for Hopton:

To close this out from my end. I decided to go with the respective Colonel's Regimental standard for both, and am quite happy with it. They should arrive early this week and I am nearly finished with the mounted standard bearers.
