Late Romans of the eastern kind in 15mm

I recently finished the first unit for my late Roman army in 15mm, cataphracts! Miniatures are by Forged in Battle, lovely sculpts with the lances being tough and surviving several drops. Not entirely pleased with the horses however, details missing and I needed to greenstuff some of the ears.

Based for To the Strongest, thinking of basing infantry 30 to a base or maybe even 40. I dislike transfers for small miniatures so I'll be painting all the elaborate shields by hand. Fun project though I won't be working on it in the foreseeable future due to work abroad.

I've been wanting to do early-mid Byzantines for a little while now, and after much soul-searching I decided they should be in 15mm (...after I do the rest of my 15mm Ancients). My current 15mm Ancients are all FiB too - lovely models.

I hope that despite work abroad we get to see more of these...?

I was amazed that LBM did 15mm transfers at all! But, like you, I am doing my shield designs by hand as well, since I think they will look too"obvious" as transfers... I have simplified designs in mind though!

Just beautiful.  I hate to think how long it will take you to build a TTS army with units of the size you mention. That said it will have a "wow" factor when finished. Do you plan a historical opponent? I game TTS in 28mm and still have 4 unpainted armies in the stash .Hoping to get 1-2 painted during 2022.

This is an old image but shows the hand painted shields. Not as hard as I thought though this is a very simple pattern 
I'm going to use the notitia dignitatum as my source for which units to include, so this is the legio V Macedonica.

Striking, simple, and neatly painted is far better (especially en-masse) than trying do whole units of fiddly and difficult designs that end up looking a bit irregular. Your successful efforts look like proof of this!

Having been painting Quintani ( soldiers of the V Macedonica ) since the late 1980s ... and in 25 then 28 mm scale, I can but bow with respect to the shield emblems of your men: great painting.

I have finally made enough progress to share an update with you all. I painted these shields in a continuous 12 hour sitting, going crazy near the end 
Now all 30 are ready to be put on one 120x60mm base.

Impressive painting especially the shields. I try but I am not at your level.
