Last Friday LeadFool and Vynnie put on a Cossacks vs Russians game at our local hangout. Leadfool was Zelensky, the Cossack commander and Vynnie got stuck playing the Russian, Putinoffsky. Unfortunately, I was out with a cold and missed the game so Leadfool provided the following AAR.
Terrain,
One wooded hill on my left that blocked the side of the board. One wooded hill on the right that still allowed a path past it. Other than that, it was open.
I fielded 3 units of normal shot and 3 units of normal Gallopers. 24pt.
Vince had a unit of pike, three units of shot an artillery piece and one unit of gallopers.
Russians were the attackers.
The first turn all his units advanced, and I failed to activate my first unit (Rolled a 3).
Second Turn all but one of his units activated and I failed to move after my second unit.
We decided, you would have been upset by this point, but we continued with the game as written.
Third turn, Only a few of Vinces units moved and most of my forces advanced. There was one fight on the flank beyond the hill. With the Cavalry charging and counter charging each other.
My troops had moved into long range of Vince, so he started firing at me. and advancing his pikes.
I put a cavalry unit on the hill on my left flank, and began to shoot back. We each inflicted a few casualties but nothing major. His Artillery only fired once in the game but it was nasty when it did.
Next turn my horse on the flank charged a slightly damaged shot unit and caused a number of casualties that caused it to waiver. Waiver is much more dangerous in this game. The right flank Cavalry battle eventually got down to two half units slaming into each other and Vinces dice rolloing beat mine. My unit waivered and was eventually chased off the field by his cavalry.
In the center another of Vinces units broke under musket fire. Crucially this contained his commander. Then his pikes charged my Cav and nearly eliminated the unit.
Next turn That Cav unit charged his gun and inflicted enough casualties to bring it to half strength. Missile fire continued to be exchanged.
Then the Pike turned and charged the Cav. again and destroyed the unit. My musket fire managed to inflict casualties on that unit as well.
We called it a night when Vince was down to one shot unit, a gun with 2 crew a two figure Cav unit and three units moving off the field. Once a unit waivers, and it is hard to get it back and especially without a commander. I lost Two Cavalry units. and one shot unit was at half.
The Cossacks remain free once again from Russian Domination!
