For King and Parliament game - ECW in 28mm
« on: March 31, 2022, 03:01:51 PM »
With restrictions easing but our club premises not reopened [being used for vaccinations by local government] I've been hosting a series of multiplayer games at home on my 12x6 table.

This particular one was a 6 player game of For King and Parliament - the grid based sister game to To The Strongest. A relatively simple scenario - each side was given an objective on the there side of the table to capture whilst holding onto its own.

My collection reinforced by that of a pal, Alasdair to give more than 30 units a side. These rules play pretty quickly so we metered through to a Parliamentarian narrow win in about three hours.

Even with several new players the rules were easily implemented. Grids mean you don't have to worry at all about precise placement. Unit bases were standardised - apart from guns - on 12x6cm bases. Since the game I've been painting up some more cavalry to bulk out my own collection a bit.

Midpoint, excellent looking collection. I am still working through my FK&P forces.  I have done something pretty similar to yourself.  I have 17 man infantry regiments with 2 x 4 musketeers flanking a 3 x 3 block of pike.  They all fit on one of Simon Miller's FK&P bases for use on my 6" gridded mat . Cavalry are in 4 model regiments. My target is 12 foot and 8 cavalry regiments per side plus some Scots Covenanters.

That should give a good game.

Pike need a depth and width of at least three to look anything like a block, and shot sleeves of 4-6 per side work pretty well. I can get all those on one 12x6cm base meaning I get more squares on a 180x120 mat - making for a more flexible game. On the full table I overlap two mats a little and things motor along quite nicely.

Midpoint, very jealous of your ability to run 12 x 6" games at home.  My more modest ambition is to expand my 6 x 4" to an 8 x 6"  where the extra 2" isn't needed much for FK&P of TTs but may be of use for 20th century "armour based"  games where I want more "manoeuvre room".  I am just in the process of basing up my first six Parliamentarian foot regiments and then I can start some small ECW games. I haven't played FK&P for several years so it will be interesting to see how it plays.

Good looking game!

I’m interested that in 28mm you are using 12x6cm bases, and with 10mm figures we have used 12x4cm bases, with probably 50% more figures on. Does show the flexibility of the rules in that its the grid and base size that matters, not the figure size or number of figures.

Fred, interesting that you are using 10mm. We did think of going either 6 or10mm but (a) decided our collective eyesight wasn’t good enough for 6mm and (b) as some already had 28mm we went with that. Being able to buy some Warlord plastic sprues dirt cheap helped. That said I do regret using figures with plastic pikes!

This is our general hobby/effing about room. Tables are folding 6x2.5 ft ones. I can just about fit them width wise if I don't invite the podgiest of gamers. I think your table would be plenty big enough for 2-4 players.

I agree. I'm now minded to do my armies on unit sized basing where possible. Speeds up everything. How you fill those bases is up to us and our aesthetics. I picked 12x6cm as a good standard for armies from throughout history - a Punic game on these mats is available in the Ancients section of this forum. And I'll use it for Rommel.

If I was exclusively a smaller scale gamer I might have gone smaller - 8-10cm, but I'm spread out over the usual sizes. Depends on the collection.

wow, great game.

Thanks both. Nice to get some home games again after the hiatus. I've missed them - and the people. Well, most of them  ;)
