Engagement (at the stone) Ring
« on: July 21, 2022, 05:43:23 PM »
An Ancient skirmish using slightly tweaked Lion Rampant.
Gauls:- Vitalstatistix (Flatpack) & Fullyautomatix (JC)
Romans:- Lordelpus (Vodkafan) & Christmasbonus (Myself)

I chose scenario 'B' from the rules. Defending the indefensible.

Background given to the players.
There has already been some fighting between the Romans & local Gauls.
(This explained away shortage of troops on two Gallic units).
The Roman commander sent troops to deface their Sacred Henge (Stone Circle)

The Gauls have gathered together a scratch force to stop them.
The Roman slinger unit, mercenary Rhodians, have not been paid for a month,
so their numbers & moral are low.

The Romans needed to get at least one unit into the circle & spend one move
defacing it. The Gauls had to stop them.
783 = On the Roman left Lordelus orders the Auxillia into the nearest wood,
to clear the Warband out of it.
784= Meanwhile my Legionaries look on.
786=Auxillia throw the Warband out of the woods. Hooray!
787=But the Gauls come back. Auxillia now retire.
788=Then on the run.
789=Lordelpus responds to a personal challenge from Vitalststistics.
They fight each other to a standstill.
790= The Warband, already heavily battered decide NOT to hold up in
the wood, but charge into the legionaries crossing the river.
We all admire  there Gallic bravery
C’est magnifique, mais ce n’est pas la guerre: c'est de la folie ("It is magnificent, but it is
         not war: it is madness"...
         Then they WIN ???????

More to come.

What a cracking scenario and game - any more details on units, size, and stats etc I may need as I would like to try a similar game.

Also, any chance of a close-up of the stones. As I will now need to make a stone circle of my own...

Like the Celt with the horse standard - who makes him?

791= The victorious Warband taunt the legionaries.
792= To restore Latin pride Lordelpus challenges Vitalstatistix to personal combat.
He then dies & his body floats down the river. He wasn't mourned for long,
as his troops passed the required moral test.
793= My legionaries advance
794= Fullyautomatix counters by leading his Gaesatae forward.
795= I challenge him to personal combat. It was thrilling..
         OK it was another draw.
796=I piled in then with the legionaries. Their victory was the end for
        The Gauls. The slingers ran.
797=The Romans, with no opposition, set about defacing the sacred stones.
'They create a desert and call it peace'

Did we have a fun game?  Yes
Would we play it again?  The answer was a definite 'yes'.

Units under Lion Rampant are either 6 figures or 12 figures.
The idea of using the rules for Ancients came from

I will sort out some close-ups of the stones. They are really more Viking,
but they are nice & don't get out often.

I have no idea who makes the Horse standard figure, it came second hand
with a lot of other figures. Maybe someone else can I.D. it.

Very enjoyable game today.
I was covering the Gaul right flank of the stones.
I decided to take the bull by the horns, so instead of waiting for the Romans to come on to me, I attacked them thro the woods.

My Gauls attack the Roman lights in the woods.

Roman bashing in the woods continues.

Run away Romans, round 1.

As the light troops regroup, they bring in the big boys.

A personal challenge is issues by the Roman leader.
Now you see him.

Now you don’t. Lol

My last few brave Gauls fight to their death at the river.

My cavalry (only 2 figures) retire, as the Romans approach the stones.

My cavalry retire to fight another day, as the Romans seize the stones, and victory.

Fun game, enjoyed by all, thanks Pete.

One final photo.
Is this classed as “Ancient Pap ?”  lol  lol

Here are my few photos of the game.
I am Lordelpus, an aristocratic Roman officer doing his required short stint in the military before retiring back to Rome. Lordelpus is an excellent leader, popular and good at motivating his men in all situations.
The local Gauls have been troublesome and to teach them a lesson we intend to occupy and despoil their ring of sacred  standing stones. The legionaries are enjoying the prospect of doing this in the most simple and natural fashion and have delayed their morning toilet in expectation.
Here is Lordelpus and his legionaries and a half unit of auxiliaries on the Roman side of the river before the off.

It is obvious that the Gauls are going to try to prevent us reaching the stones. Before my auxiliaries even cross the river a Gaul warband occupies the woods the other side. However in two swift moves I charge into the woods and the battle is on!

Meanwhile Lordelpus prepares his heavy Legionaries to get their feet wet:

I win this first combat and the tribesman are pushed back. But as soon as the Gaul leader takes his turn the tribesman rush into the woods again and the second fight is especially fierce.

This time I take the most casualties and the auxiliaries retreat back across the river.

This is not to Lordelpus' liking.
He needs time to get his heavy legionaries across the river. He scolds the Auxilia and sends them back into the woods for a third battle:

In the meantime he starts to cross with the heavy infantry:

But the Auxilia lose another man and retreat again while the cohort are all in the river.

The Gallic Chieftan challenges Lordelpus to one-to-one combat. He accepts.

The combat is a draw. Lordelpus returns to his unit.
Suddenly without warning the Gallic warband ferociously attack the cohort while they are in the river. The warband is only at half strength, but being knee deep in water negates half of the legionaries armour value!

Both sides take casualties, but the cohort is pushed back to the Roman side of the river.

The Gaul Chieftan challenges Lordelpus to combat again.

The Chieftan's spear is thrust into Roman vitals! Lordelpus is slain in front of his horrified men!

His body floats off down the river.

The enraged Romans jump back into the river and this time wipe out the remaining tribesmen. (with no help from the Auxilia, which have refused to move)

My battered units regroup and begin to advance, but are nowhere near the Sacred Stones yet.

On the eastern side  of the woods another couple of Roman units under Peter's command has been advancing steadily.
I don't have many pics from Peter's side of the table. He faces some Gaul slingers and a half unit of very determined naked fanatics.

At least he did have two units, but his disgruntled and understrength Roman slingers hadn't been paid so they slipped off at the first opportunity.
Another challenge was issued and the leader of the fanatics and the Romans met in single combat

But this was a draw and the two units got stuck in instead

The Romans were victorious and the Gallic resistance melted away (they lost more than half their points value  of figures) and the Romans occupied the Sacred Stones.

The mod to these Osprey blue book rules seemed to work well and gave a fun game.

I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Report to moderator

Not only that, but as a precursor to what Portsmouth FC fans did to the British Stonehenge,
they painted, ' Pompeii eu clava regulae!' (Pompeii football club rule!) over them  :o

As requested, close up of the stones.
(sold by Fenris games.)   https://fenrisgames.com/
Really for Vikings, but as I said, I like them & they don't
get onto the table often enough.

all apart from the two in the last picture. They came from our garden. lol

He’s a Wargames Foundry ancient German sculpted by Mark Copplestone.
