This story won my vote, but I must say that they are all good stories. Well done to all who entered.

Sorry, not my area of expertise. The only book I have read about it is that one by Churchill (My Youth?) but it says little about the foe, just his own overrated self *ducks* :)

Grimm, "The Boer War" by (Sir?) Thomas Pakenham is one of the best military history books I have ever read.  The author is the same guy who wrote "The Scramble for Africa."

Interesting. I had no idea my countrymen fought for the Boers.

The flags on the photo is the old "union flags".

Thanks Witchheimer!!!  :)

Yes, it is a pretty interesting story, isn't? Although a rather foolish undertaking, from today's perspective.
There are a few stories like this about Swedish adventurers taking part in wars all over. It is for example pretty interesting to read about the Swedish Persian Gendarmerie was involved in the campaigns in Persia during WWI and after.

And then there is of course the notorious von Rosen family of fliers...
