Has anyone gotten “Space Station Zero”?
« on: August 26, 2022, 06:54:19 PM »
Just heard of this from a friend yesterday:

https://www.snarlingbadger.com/spacestationzero

Have their previous rule sets been worth it?

Thanks

Dan

EDIT
Looks like it hasn’t been out as long as I had initially thought:

So it's the American Stargrave then?  :D

Joking aside, I do like the sound of the campaignsystem...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Interesting.  It looks like they ran a full demo today:

Having watched the videos it looks a lot like 5 Parsecs from Home but with much less scope for retrofitting your own backstory to it, because its basically a dungeon crawl in space. If that’s your thing it looks very playable.I’m slightly bemused by the use of D12s when you are basically on a 50/50 chance. Wouldn’t D6s, which are far more common, work just as well?

Since I already have 5 Parsecs I don’t see me getting this and if it were a decision on which to get if I had neither I think 5 Parsecs would win out.

5 Parsecs feels like RPG lite for billy-no-mates while this feels, at first sight, like Space Hulk with more options.

Of course if you are a fan of Space Hulk, and why wouldn’t you be, maybe this is the one for you.

There are 100 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data.

Just picked it up.  Miniature agnostic, fast play co-op Sci Fi with lots of scenarios is something I'm very interested in. Waiting on the print copy but I've got the PDF now. Should be worth it if only for the 24 scenarios. Could also be a great idea for the massive lot of Vault style terrain I recently acquired.

Plus, I wanted to support Adam. I don't watch allot of his content  but my son and I had a great time at TMX this summer and got a great table space.

In some cases natural 1s are crit fails and natural 12s are critical successes. I guess they wanted a chance of those smaller than 1 in 6, or 1 in 10 on a d10?

I have the PDF going to read it on holiday, but I also have the paper version on order also.

So far from what I have seen I like it.

I just got it. Haven't read completely through it but
it does look fun, and I am looking forward to playing it.

As for what's been suggested here so far:

-This game seems rather more streamlined and lighter than Stargrave.  There do seem to be some real efforts to go for flavor though, in the missions and crew selection. Not that Star/FrostGrave are terribly complex but on brief readthrough, this does seem to hit at my preferred level of complexity which leans more toward Song of Blades and Heroes and as a game that emphasizes Co-Op play, I think it might be a game that my son and I can enjoy together.

-I don't think it would be very difficult to modify the setting.  As suggested, it is a dungeon-encounters-in space sort of game, but there's alot of different sci-fi settings it could plug into.

-I think the D12 choice is partly to be different, and partly because it gave them the range the authors apparently decided they wanted for situations where the value of the dice actually comes into play such as cover and armor.

Here's what I posted on a different forum:
Quote
The Paper copy arrived today and I started flipping through it. Still no real opinion on the game mechanics specifics, but I really like the balance they seem to have achieved with a rather light ruleset that still seems to have alot of flavor. I also love the art style. The missions are the real jem though I think. Some real interesting stuff there that will be fun to explore especially if I can get my son or friends to play co-op with me.

Also, there seems to be a need for some robots for various scenarios and that should give me an excuse to paint up (and maybe convert a few of) the plastic Terminator Genysis starter box figures I've got on the shelf.

Two complaints I do have about the presentation and promotion though.

1) For a game in a spaceship, they don't seem to do much to picture or suggest spaceship-like terrain. Even though you roll and add your own terrain to the table, all the scenario layouts look rather open, more like an outdoor game and this has been reflected in videos as well. I definitely think I'll be working in more interesting terrain options if I end up playing this.

2) For a game with such cool art and theme, why are both the battle reports I've seen done with Adam and/or Vince with mostly GW figures and terrain? I know those guys know about (and probably own) great stuff that actually looks more like their game.
UGH.
Especially ironic since last week's TM video was titled "Your game better have GOOD art". I agre but I would suggest that also "Your game videos better have figures and terrain that reflect that art!"

Anyway, rant over. I'm pleased with this so far and am happy that supporting Adam and Vince has landed me with a cool game I'm actually rather interested in playing

For the why not use d6 question -

not only are you looking for even numbers as successes to match the difficulty level but often there will be a Target Number as well.

For example:  Target 6 in which case only even rolls 6 and over will count towards success.  A d6 would not have the range to make this check interesting.

Have not committed little boots on the ground yet but it does look very interesting for a solo outing and I have my crew statted up and ready to go.

Also you can make the play area look how you want and chuck as much terrain and scatter down as you wish without making it too difficult to contact enemy models and tasks..

This is the balance I'm going to be looking to achieve. I always prefer a dense skirmish terrain table, especially for interior games.  Will be interested to see if a table with that sort of terrain will negatively affect the ability to play the scenarios as written.

The scenarios seem great in the book but the tables pictured so far  in their battle reports are utterly uninspiring.

This.

The review videos make the gameplay look really insipid and all about how lucky you roll. I was considering picking up the pdf purely for the scenarios (to use with Void Pirates) but feel that if they are geared to creating scenarios like are used in the videos, it is not worth it.

I've had the print copy a couple of days now and done a bit of a read, but I must emphasise that I've not played a game. It seems to sit on the lighter side of "Five Parsecs..." . I like the crew creation, channeled but not too restrictive. I also like that the scenarios have more of an element of non combat objectives to make you have a more varied crew skill range.

I agree it does have a dungeon crawl feel but like that the scenarios are continuous so there is a survival aspect in there. The playthrough videos are a bit underwhelming it has to be said, but it may be the presentation (also I find gameplay videos dull anyway!)

I'm looking forward to having a game when I can get myself organised.

Had the pdf since release day 2. Print book showed up a week later. Spent yesterday and today reading the rules. I haven't read a rulebook let alone in a day in two decades. So that says something.
I like what I have read. I like it's miniature agnostic. I hope to get to play some games. After reading the rules I see why D12's and not D6's. Can't wait to read more reviews of the rules.
