Using a boardgame for the strategic battles

Today, I put Tewkesbury 1471 on the table, using the boardgame Blood and Roses from the Men of Iron series (GMT), but included some extra units from my own Wars of the Roses imaginations campaign that use figures to fight in the fictional setting of Piggy Longton.

So today saw a melding of boardgame meets a figures campaign and a ‘new’ history fell from the game that will propel my own campaign in a deliberate direction.

Board wargames are great for the campaign strategic level - I have done similar with Avalon Hill's Kingmaker and Robin Hood for Medieval.

I used to have a Jacobite rebellion game. It would have made a great background
for a campaign &, now I have 28mm figures for the 45, I can't find another copy

The areas on the map each had their own number. I think pro-Jacobites were low,
while pro-Government were high. If your army moved into another area you diced
& added the score to the area's number. For the Jacobites, If the result was below 7
you gained recruits. Above 7 you suffered deserters, sick etc. (Situation reversed for
the Government player.) Thus it encouraged Bonny Prince Charlie to land way up in
Scotland, tour around building up an army, then marching south. Hoping that the
army was big enough to survive the shrinkage befor it reached the Government
army/armies.
Would work very well for a campaign backdrop. Anyone got a copy they don't want?

It is expensive in boxed form, but the Print And Play version is extremely cost effective. Doing PnP games quite often once you get hold of the system they are not that difficult, and you can resize them to suit your needs too. The system is detailed, but being detailed is easier to port to miniatures.

I'll take a long look at the Print & Play option,
but if anyone does know of a reasonably priced
copy of the simple board game...

We have tried this a few times with boardgames generating miniatures battles. With Crown of paper and even Mighty Empires and we have talked about Nevski as well. The trouble is that the board games themselves are so involving the you kind of want to play them. And the the actual miniatures battle becomes a bit of a hassle.

As an alternative:

There is a Blackpowder Last Argument of Kings supplement which has a handful of pages outlining a Jacobite Campaign. I know there was some LAF postings about a Pikemans Lament campaign using these as a basis a while back in early covid times I think.

Also Volley and Bayonet have a Jacobite Rebellion books 1 & 2 which includes a map based campaign and lot of background, although doesn't sound like you need much background.
