AWI Hessian Grenadiers (28mm)
« on: September 30, 2022, 12:00:04 PM »
I've been digging out my old 28mm AWI collection (after a gap of some 12+ years) for some games at the Carmarthen Old Guard and thought I may as well take some photos of the troops, so here's von Donop's Hessian Grenadier Brigade (a lot more on the blog):

Beautiful ….. how could they possibly have been in barracks for 12 years! :-)

We did rather do AWI to death from 2004 to 2009! :) We rapidly built up to playing the largest battles of the war (Long Island, Brandywine, Monmouth, Germantown etc, both as a club and in collaboration with 'Eclaireur' (author of the 'British Grenadier!' rules) and Giles Allison ('Tarleton's Quarter' blog).  We then got distracted by other projects; one of which was the Battle of Fishguard 1797, also using 'British Grenadier!'.

Cheers MG!  I can't swear for the accuracy, as I lost all my notes after painting them 17 years ago and in any case, research has moved on since then!  :D

Baron von Wreckedoften will soon be along to correct my manifest errors though, I'm sure.  :D

Not to pile on the platitudes, but those Hessian fellers do look the business.  Well done!

I'm shameless, so I'll take it! ;) Thanks CJ.  I don't think I can do them quite to that standard any more, though.

Not only are the figures delightfully painted - the blog post is a consummate guide for painting Hessians (and not just the grenadiers but their parent units even).  And I say that even with the 'updated research' which is a very relative thing.  At this remove of time, truly new information is hard to come by, especially first hand period information.  And since the figures are for gaming, in the end, who gives a tinker's dam (or damn) about exactitude!  Take it as far as we can or care do and put the Damn figure on the table and play with it.  So says I.  :o

I have book marked your blog post for my own AWI painting, really amazing amount of information there.  So, thank you for that.

Cheers 15s, that's very kind!

This is only the first AWI article.  There will be more as I photograph the collection.  Next up will be a couple of Hessian line regiments, artillery, Jager and General von Knyphausen.

Those are spectacular figures!!
I think that those are equal to Giles' efforts.

Can we PLEASE do something about those bases?
Please, please, please!!!!

Cheers!  I haven't seen Giles for years, but once upon a time we provided troops for the same AWI mega-games. :)

Nah, bases are boring.  It's an improvement on my previous method of just painting them green, so suits me.  ;)

Oh, I don't know.  I've seen some of your recent stuff on here...

I'm with you there.  My bases are pretty, well, basic...
