I've been running an online Old School Essentials campaign for a few years now, and one of the regulars painted up some Copplestone barbarians as a thank you. He left the bases plain so I could clip them away and match them to the rest of the collection, but with bases being my least favourite aspect of miniature hobbying it's taken an embarrassingly long time to get round to doing so. They've done pretty well against my 5 Leagues warband, so I'm hoping this effort spent will strike them with the new paint job curse.

They look excellent! I like the colours and the basing style.

Have to admit that if I had more confidence in my ability to do so reliably, I'd be basing every model on a clear plastic disk. I don't know why, but I find basing to be the biggest chore in the hobby. I used to put it down to running out of puff after finishing the figure itself, but I didn't even paint these ones.

I like basing after it’s done. I usually find the basing process repetitive. That’s my own fault, though, as I use mostly the same colour palette for my entire collection to keep everything compatible for use in different games. Transparent disks would achieve the same thing.

Thanks!

I find it's almost a mental hurdle to paint anything that isn't the actual mini itself, and I feel the same way when I paint steeds. Clipping integral bases away at least feels like mini prep, rather than time that I could be painting another person. Which means I find myself not painting anything at all. Brains are weird.

There's enough margin for error when clipping and filing 28mm feet to get enough glue between mini and clear base. I'm not precise enough, I fear, to get enough surface area for 15mm feet to grip sufficiently to a plastic surface.

I expect you’re right about the difficulties of clipping off 15mm bases. I have done it a bit to convert infantry to riders and broke feet off in the process. It’s no problem sculpting on a replacement leg or foot on a cavalry figure, but it would be difficult to fix on a clear plastic base! When I mounted 15mm figures in chariots I ended up filing the bases off as thin as I could, but kept a layer of metal to maximize surface area for the glue to grip. That no use for clear bases either, though!

[Doodler's 15mm] Walls, werewolves and warm ups (11 Jan)
« Reply #127 on: January 11, 2025, 04:58:42 PM »
Found some old grated cork from a previous terrain build late last year, so used some old lego to throw together some quick and easy stone walls.

I've been house-ruling 5 Leagues from the Borderlands to be more MESBG-esque, and for the next campaign I want to bulk out the collection a bit more to make the most of the enemy variety on offer. So I warmed up for 2025 with a dry-brush and speedpaint mini to try getting into the 'good enough' head space.

Have had some Alternative Armies werewolves lying around for ages, and thought they'd be a good launch pad for the 'good enough' year. Making a conscious effort not to go back and redo bits for a while.

Collection's missing some demi-human adventurers, so I painted a few up from Alternative Armies and Ral Partha Europe.

Also remembered I got a GW mini some 20 years ago which had never seen action, and what with 28mm hobbits not being far off a 15mm human I drybrushed and speed painted him to serve as a captive token.

They all look great! Who makes the figures with the hoods (halflings)? Someday I would like to add some halflings to my 15mm collection and I like the style of those.

Very nice halflings and dwarves. If I didn't already have loads of 28mm, your thread would tempt me to start 15mm fantasy.
