Modular 28mm scifi board (April 21 - Images of the Whole Board)
« on: October 11, 2022, 05:26:36 AM »
I own a lot of shiny tools: an Ender 5 FDM 3D printer, a Proxxon cutter, a Silhouette Cameo 4 CNC cutter and an airbrush. I've wanted a modular scifi board for a while, so I figured I would combine all these tools into something fun. So for the past couple of months I've started collecting the pieces needed, which are finally coming together now. A few shots from a recent test game of my scifi variant of Sellswords (a coop skirmish game).

Most of the 3D printed buildings are from Corvus Games' Tycho Starport Kickstarter, with one (the one that failed midprint) a Dark Realms building.

Today I got into the serious business of actually building out some of the tiles - starting with a set of 3 road tiles and one kiosk.

All of the tiles are the same base - a 6x6 Open Lock 3D printed tile with the centre removed in FreeCAD. I filled the gap with XPS foam and then cut more for the concrete roadbed and sidewalks.

The kiosk building here is also Tycho Starport, while the black 3D printed tile is from Project Mobius

Laid out all the pieces I've printed today - I've almost got a full 3'x3' board.  The tiles are a mixture of 7mm tall (standard Open Lock height) and 1"/25.4mm. The 1" pieces were all done by me in FreeCAD.

You can see the empty spaces in the middle - that shortens print time and allows some vertical elements to be "below" the table.

Very interesting project; great idea to have some hollowed out pieces.

I am a little jealous of your tool list; all I have of those is a airbrush. I'd like to get a printer, cnc/engraver and a proxxon but all the space I have where I could put those is currently occupied by boxes and boxes of unpainted minis  :'( :'( :'(.

The hollowed out pieces will eventually be filled with foam (although I'll likely do craters or something to lower the level down). Next time you make it down the island, it should he done and playable

Started printing the board edges, which are Open Lock tiles with numbers embossed on them. I have some chipping medium, so planning on doing a rusted look to these once they're printed. The font is Oxanium, in case anybody wants a good, free scifi font.

To give some idea as to time, each of the 6" lengths takes about 2 hours to print.

Finally got the whole board at least finished and partially painted for a con this weekend. A quick and dirty dry brush gave it at least some depth. Now onto the painting

Finally getting back to posting here. Been working on some painting recently  - mostly colour on parts of the buildings.

I also added some concrete colour to the roads, no pictures of those yet.

Nice work on those. The simple color slashes add allot.

Amazing how much one line of one colour really makes a difference

Lots of bits done as I work towards the upcoming Trumpeter Salute (not to be confused with Salute in the UK, this is in Vancouver, Canada).

First up, the border edges. These were printed months ago, but I finally got the final coat of paint on them. First I sponged on burnt sienna with some raw sienna and red oxide for accent, then chipping medium, then a load of blues via an airbrush. Chipped that then added white paint by brush, chipped that and sealed
