Lizardmen with Proper Weapons! (that is to say, swords)
« on: December 15, 2022, 06:57:43 PM »
I'm looking for some well-armed lizardmen for a little project idea.

Most lizardmen miniatures I've seen are depicted as "primitive not-Aztecs" (thanks to GW, no doubt), wielding obsidian-edged clubs, blow-pipes and turtle-shell shields. I'm not interested in that; what I'm looking for are lizardmen who understand and/or have access to advanced metallurgy and the products thereof, i.e. SWORDS!

So far the best option I've seen is this from Otherworld:

There's only one of him, though. I was hoping to find a few more in the same vein. Do you have any suggestions?

Many thanks!

Wargames Atlantic Lizardmen may be a touch primitive for you but they  have options for spears, muskets and AK47s and being plastic they're ripe for conversion to whatever weapons you want.

They also stand more upright than the hunchy GW minis.

Holy dang, that one lizard might be alone, but he sure looks nice. Lovely painting!

They aren't lizardmen, but if your idea can be flexible with your choice of reptilian humanoids then the metal packs in support of Frostgrave's plastic Snakemen box-set are really excellent and have (bronze age looking) proper weapons:

Good suggestion! If I got these I'd definitely choose some alternative weapons (swords and shields from another sprue somewhere).

Can't take any credit for that unfortunately; that's the Otherworld Miniatures online store photo!

Thanks for the suggestion, Gibby; that is definitely more like it!

The old Rieder lizardmen (plus one Bob Olley extra) available from Alternative Armies are quite nice and have metal weapons:

The Tyrosaurs from Battlezone have metal maces and spears:

I think the same designer did Lancer's lizardmen. Some have metal spears; others have more Aztec-y weapons, BUT those with two-handed weapons (which could be metal) have separate weapons, so you could easily replace them with polearms or battle-axes.

Also, if you want really well-armed lizardmen, Lancer have you sorted:

Mageknight lizardmen may also be an option. Height is very close to proper 28mm, they are relatively slender compared with GW lizardmen.
They are prepainted plastics usually needing a minor tidy up. The commons in at least one set included lizardmen wielding a mace, or a trident, or two-pawed polearm. One of the sets also had a robed lizardman holding a potion. Uncommons and rares in some sets included lizardmen riding giant snake/worm creatures or other monsters. They are out of production but there were a lot made and they regularly turn up on eBay, sometimes at reasonable prices.
I use many of the figures in a Kings of War fantasy army.

Otherworld offers four lizardmen variants and the lizard king, so you might need to explain what you mean when you say there is only one. Did you find something about the others unsuitable? Their arms seem to me to be of the same level of sophistication, and WE5b seems particularly suited for modification to make additional variants with whatever arms you want.  ??? All in all I don't think you will find better than Muller at any rate.

Sorry, my first post wasn't especially clear about this, but what I am looking for is lizardmen with swords (and shields) in particular, as they would fit best with my project concept. The original draft of my post made this obvious, but then I modified it for some bizarre reason and the new wording made it sound as if I was looking for any old weapon which wasn't made from raw, "primitive" materials.

Many thanks to all for the suggestions, though; there have been some refreshing examples that don't follow the GW pattern.

I wasn't aware of the existence of this image until today (I've never read the original AD&D books):

(thanks to Hobgoblin for posting it in his own thread)

Basically, I was looking for Lizardmen that looked like that (or similar) ^

All in all I don't think you will find better than Muller at any rate.

I think you're right!

For the purposes of my project, I might just buy multiples of the same miniature. I never thought anything of employing multiple monopose miniatures in a battle until very recently, and there's no reason why it can't be done. In fact, I think, within the context of my project idea, it might work really well.

(Ethelred beat me to it, but I’ll leave the first part in) Another possible source for lizard men equipped with metal gear is Mirliton Miniatures. https://www.mirliton.it/fantasy-25-28mm/lost-lizardmen-world

They have a couple of styles of lizard men. The ones with swords are in a few packs. I have a few of these from back when Grenadier made them, and they’re on the small side compared to current figs - definitely true-25mm - but very finely detailed figures.

Also, Ral Partha made true-25 lizardmen with metal equipment and those have been re-released by Ral Partha Legacy. The troglodytes might work https://ralparthalegacy.com/products/98-0141?_pos=4&_sid=cd4d171b3&_ss=r

And there are also the lizardmen https://ralparthalegacy.com/products/98-0181?_pos=13&_sid=e5bec154a&_ss=r

Individual figures are available, but are pretty expensive (in my option. I might just be tight fisted…)

If conversion don't afraid you, you can also use heads and tails of plastic dinosaurs on warriors bodies (like frostgrave demons for exemple).
