15mm Stones River at Devon Wargames Christmas Game 1
« on: 16 December 2022, 12:42:30 PM »
The Christmas meeting at Devon Wargames is traditionally one big game however with the steady increase in new members we had to split into two this year with both set in the ACW .

The link to game 1 is below with the Battle of Stones river used as the base , after that it was a free for all.  Very few snacks survived . I would add one of the many  tempting pictures from the AAR but have no idea how to do it.

Wow! Just wow…what a spectacular tabletop battle. If i count correctly nearly 400 stands altogether!
Just…wait…legendary!

Fantastic!  :-*

I ran the scenario as a demo game at Warfare (then at Ascot Racecourse) in 2021 and although the Rebels initially overran the Union right flank, the attritional losses meant that they ran out of steam half-way up the table, just beyond the Wilkinson Turnpike.  The Rebel right flank also got hammered by the massive Union artillery superiority, as they were still able to fire, even when the scenario prevented them from moving.  It's therefore hard to see how the Rebels could achieve anything like their historical performance.

Therefore, I'd like to give the scenario another go, this time with more of the Union artillery in the Centre and Left Wings limbered and in reserve and with a greater proportion of the Rebels having 'Spirited' unit effectiveness, while bumping the Union unit effectiveness down a peg or two.

In my Stones River scenario for Bloody Big Battles, I had the first two turns or so foggy, which reduced artillery range and kept the Confederate right flank from getting slammed right away. Let's see, each turn was an hour of combat. The Union left and center were unable to move on the first turn. The center could move on turn 2, the left on turn 3. The Confederates moved first each turn.

With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Nice looking game.

I ran the battle using JRII about thirty years ago!  Barely remember the details at this remove but I do recall people had a good time.

Lovely game and report!  Hurrah for the Union!  :D

As an aside, Stones River is a great battlefield to visit, should one ever get the chance...

Very nice, I may be moving back to Plymouth next year so I may call in on a club day.  If that would be ok?
