I cut the foam with my proxon cutting table into very thin slices, something like 2mm thick , you can almost look through it. I use a cutting device from "shifting lands "( I think thats  the name when I remember correctly). It simply is a piece of mdf standing upright as a guide for the foam to get a equal thickness over the complete block of foam. Hope that  makes sense..
