Where to find cheap shields
« on: 01 March 2023, 04:43:17 PM »
Please feel free to move to a more appropriate area if needed.

So, I'm looking for cheap shields for a project I'm working on. I need a lot of them, like a few hundreds
Fantasy, historical, realistic, outlandish, human, dwarf, orc, elf, skaven...  it doesn't matter, as long as they're shields and as long as they're cheap.
I've already looked at EM4 miniatures (which would probably be the best supplier) but the cost to ship to canada makes them way more expensive than what I'm willing to pay for shields.

Any suggestion?

Maybe see if a locally based 3D printing service can print you some?

going with the 3D prints might be my best option, in the end.
Although I'd prefer to work with plastic (or metal).
I'll start looking at that too

You can also mass produce them using either Blue Stuff or Oyumaru.  Use either to make about ten to fifteen press molds of shields you have or have purchased, then mass produce them in milliput/magic sculpt or even plumbers putty.  Both Blue Stuff and Oyumaru are available online through Amazon and others.  I used them to make around a hundred loaves of scale bread from fifteen masters and it worked a treat.

Don't know what shipping would be like or if you think they are cheap but would any of the victrix plastic shields work?

thank you for all suggestions.
It looks like 3D printing, and casting my own would be the best option, both in terms of cost and in terms of numbers.

I might actually try and swap bits as well on local FB groups (and this forum)

I was not aware of them and this is absolutely perfect.

Thank you

You're very welcome. Be aware that they're  true scaled, so they might seem a bit small on big heroic figures. I'm pretty sure they're bigger than EM4 shields though. I can measure sizes if you'd like.

if you can post some pictures, maybe scaling with other shields, that'd be useful.

having said that, I rally don't care too much about scale/size.  I care more about variety and price (trying to keep the price below 20cents a shield) as I need a lot of them.

You might also want to check the Wargames Atlantic Irish Warriors set that one is really packed with plenty of shields. If needed you can then sell the rest of the content to lower the price of the shields.

I had forgot about this one.  If you want an almost unlimited supply of cheap shields you can try this.

I should be able to snap some pics tomorrow or Monday.  In the meantime here's a pic of them on figures.  The figures are 28mm, but very true scaled.

Know also that the bucklers are pretty darn small.  Here's two on  WGA halflings that are about 19mm sole to eye.

If flat round shields would do, you might use a hole punch to cut round disks out of plastic sheet, although shield bosses and other such details would still need to be cast, sculpted, or carved.
