GW and Stargrave, compatible?
« on: 22 March 2023, 11:32:32 PM »
Getting back into 28mm SciFi.  My core at present is a handful of GW quick build Cadians and a few cultists.  I’m thinking of getting a box of Stargrave crew, and maybe a couple sprues of other sets.  How do the two match up?

The older stuff matches up very nicely.

The Stargrave Troopers have a wonderful old-school, 'chunky' Rogue Trader IG feel to them without being too derivative. I've seen crews that were basically repurposed 40k figures (among others) and the like and don't see why you couldn't press them into service.

As far as compatibility between sets goes, I’m not sure. I only have a few older Cadians but my impression is that the Stargrave arms, heads, etc might work but will probably be too small.

I’ve mixed some parts from Cadians and Cultists with Stargrave figures - the GW stuff is definately chunkier, but some parts work. The GW parts can also be added to Frostgrave gnolls pretty well to give space gnolls.

I would say it depends ...

The shotgun is from Genestealers. The hand might be a tad big, and it is a Frostgrave figure. But they are the same scale as Stargrave miniatures.

The other dude has an Anvil Industries arm and a Free Peoples banner arm. Those fit better scale wise than 40k, imho.
Hope this helps a little bit.

'grave figures are smaller than GW, but man are they packed with characters.
They are slightly smaller than the snap fit Cadians.

I've kitbashed various mutants and the like using Stargrave, Frostgrave and GW parts. Stargrave arms fit quite nicely on GW Skaven plague monks, for example.

As others have said, Stargrave and Frostgrave are the same scale. I've found that gnoll and Ungor arms can be interchanged, and I have (IIRC) some sci-fi kitbashes that take advantage of this.

Frostgrave and Stargarve kit parts mix fairly well between each other, and both work well on older/smaller Citadel models.

However, I think the arms are a bit small for the older plastic Cadians, and might be for the new ones too. The older Cadians were lumpen chonkers, and whilst the new models are much more slender, they also appear to be rather taller too.

As for the heads, these should all be compatible with the old and new plastic Cadians, and make the old Cadians a bit less bobble-headed. I used some Tempestus Scions heads on my Stargrave Troopers, and they fit really well.

I would also consider the Wargames Atlantic kits, as some of those are good matches to various other models too. For example, putting WGA Cannon Fodder rifles onto Stargrave Troopers with open helmets gives you a very passable Cadian look. And if you source some third party rifles for them (Mad Robot do some that are perfect), the SG Troopers are pretty good stand-ins for the classic old Rogue Trader guard.

Really, the "best" solution is get a few sprues to start with, and see what you think before getting more of any type.

I ordered four sprues, two crew, one female crew and one trooper.
