Rules for Largish Plains War Skirmish Games
« on: April 06, 2023, 08:32:01 PM »
Looking for suggestions for rules for Plains War skirmish games for 30 - 50 figures a side. Most Old West rules seem to be for 5 - 10 figures a side. I have TMWBK which is one option.

There's Blood and Steel by Firelock games, and one of the TooFatLardies magazines (relatively recently) had an adaption of Sharp Practice for the Riel Rebellion of 1885 in Canada, so it should port over fairly easily.

QRF have Yellow Ribbon, Sharp Practice would work well too. As well as Riel there’s a few adaptations out there for classic old west, try the lard forum for links

We’ve used MWWBK for refights of LBH, Rosebud and others, using house rules that are posted to the MWWBK FB files, with great success. Both games featured over 500 28mm figures on a 12x6’ table and were fought to successful conclusions within 4 leisurely hours.

Prior to that, “Yellow Ribbon” was our ‘go to’ ruleset for the period.

Thanks for all the replies gentlemen.

I was asking on behalf of my brother who has taken a shine to the Sash and Sabre 40mm Plains War figures. See pics below. So he probably won’t go much beyond 30 - 40 figures a side.

I have the Pony Wars re-release and it is great but the scale is quite epic. Is suggests you need 600 Indians which would take some doing in 40mm!  :o Think I will suggest TMWBK rules for now and see how it goes.

Still possible to use Pony wars, simply adjust the numbers. 1:50 (or 1:25)
e.g. when the rules say 300 hostiles appear, put on 6 (or 12)of your 40mm figures.
The game will then look like a large skirmish instead of a huge battle, will still
look good, and will be fun.

Thanks, we will give it some thought.
