GuyD's Ancient Saga + Impetus
« on: April 28, 2023, 05:05:34 AM »
Hello everyone, here's my ongoing project for a Saga warband that could be used as both AoH Syracuse and AoA Athens. It's mostly made out of the Victrix Unarmored Hoplites box

First off, 1 poinf of Bow/Sling Levy

1 point of psiloi/javelin levy. These are 3d prints by March to Hell. The proportions are rather funky, but they were a joy to paint.

3 points of warriors

Syracusan and Athenian Warlords

Philopoemen, Legendary Athenian Warlord

Samnite Mercenaries

Nice figures.   How do the  3d prints by March to Hell guys compare in scale to the Victrix ?

I like the bold colors.  And I see you're not afraid to freehand shields.

Here's a 3dbreed/MtR psiloi next to Warlord, Gripping Beast, Victrix and Foundry. Obviously it looks completely out of place due to cartoon proportions, but from the bird's eye view it looks fine imo.

A unit of mercenary thureophoroi, made out of victrix unarmored hoplites and samnites. The conversion is rather rough, but imo servicable.

Great pictures,  are they easy or paint up? I have avoided the 20mm plastic ranges of Greeks as I wasn’t sure of their quality of the poses.

I actually didn't have much fun with the Greeks. The poses themselves  are fine and the shields/helmets provide a lot of area to practice light NMM but the plastic Zvezda uses for their wargame miniatures is really hard to work with, sanding leaves way too much "fuzz" on the model, gluing the spears with superglue was a real chore, plastic cement doesn't really work and reposing/conversion was a nightmare.
The gauls on the other hand were much better, even though they suffer from the same shortcomings. They are mostly armed with swords rather than spears and I guess I just enjoyed painting the exposed skin and vibrant fabrics on them more than on the greeks.

Thanks for the update, I was reading the reviews on the Plastic Soldier Review website and they gave a great review. Perhaps I might try the Spartan box as a tester. I just fancied a change from painting 28mm Romans for a while

They are probably great by 1/72 standards (no offense), but coming to them after mostly dealing with 28mm plastics by GW and whatnot feels like culture shock.
