The Bone Wheel.
« on: 01 September 2023, 07:35:48 PM »
On Tuesday we played the Bone Wheel.  I made mine years ago and we only tried the scenario once with first level characters and both war-bands got mauled.  This time it is part of the full campaign and it was just as bloody.  Our Necromancer did not have any magic weapons to deal with the Banshees and ended up hanging back for the majority of the game and picked up scraps.  My illusionist managed to plow through my banshee in the second turn but then my troops were blasted by our enchanter who was throwing grenades everywhere.    Our elementalist managed to get a wizard eye up early and then dominated his half of the board until the wandering monsters came in.  A wraith knight came from the board edge and slicing through many of his troops.  In the end, three out of four got two treasures off but the losses were pretty catastrophic.  Two apprentices and one wizard did not make it off the board.  Only a few pictures here and more on my blog.  We managed seven turns in two and a half hours.
The setup.

The end of turn three.

My troops falling back on turn six.

Great work, as always. Reminds me that I need to make a bone wheel for our campaign.

Even after all these years, I have yet to see anyone surpass the beauty that is your Bone Wheel. It's such a work of art.
I have recently, finally, started building my board and I am going to build every piece of scenario specific scenery, so when I get to the Bone Wheel, I will make sure to head back here for some inspiration!

:D  crediting me with more wit than I have, but I'll take it.

I truly wish that Snitcy had the inclination and time, and Osprey (etc) had the interest and willingness to invest, for the books to be illustrated with gameplay dioramas of the quality he produces.

Very kind words all.

Bloggard, I am flattered, but I don't know how well I would work producing new stuff for photo shoots.  I have done commission work in the past and stopped becasue I hated it.  It is not the timeline or the effort.  It is that it never seems to hold my interest.  Once I am not interested and terrain becomes "work" it looses the fun aspect.  Most of my terrain is donated to other players at the club as I build new stuff.

As a player who enjoys making the bits and bobs needed for Frostgrave scenarios but who sometimes lacks inspiration, I would like a resource (book, webpage whatever) that showcases all the different interpretations of the various Frostgrave items that have made it to gaming tables across the world. They wouldn't all have to be up the high standard of snitcythedog's pieces, it would just be interesting to see what other people have used. I might then take elements of my favourite concepts or executions to incorporate into my own unique effort. Or perhaps if someone comes up with a very simple construction or proxy for an item I might copy that when time is short.  I am sure there are loads of cool Bone Wheels out there, and Sky Docks, Silent Towers, underground libraries, Arcane Discs etc.

my comment to Snitcy applies equally to you Bearwoodsman, going by your own thread (those glass spiders! brilliant).

I kind of expected Snitcy's reply (although the giving stuff away, not so much!) - and I imagine you'd feel much the same, in terms of the hobby becoming 'work' ...

But in general, I do wish miniatures gaming rulebooks had a higher standard of diormama illustration.
the painting by Dallimore et al in the osprey books is of course superb, but there is little specific* illustration of scenarios etc, etc.

(* or at least, that's the case in the books I've had from its various miniatures-gaming ip's)
