Hopes and Dreams for 2024
« on: 27 December 2023, 12:42:06 PM »
What are your plans for the coming year?

I'm going to focus for the foreseeable future on buying and painting miniatures for The Last War, but something I'm keen to try alongside that is buying and painting miniatures for RPGs!

After being curious (and suspicious) for many a year about this role-playing business, this past April I finally managed to start playing (and running) text-based RPGs with remotely-located friends thanks to instant messaging. Turns out I find RPGs very satisfying experiences and am keen to keep this going in 2024. Furthermore, I'm interested in trying out what it might be like playing an RPG session with miniatures on the tabletop instead of just the Theatre of the Mind. I'm not incredibly sure this idea is going to work for me, but I'd like to give it a shot nevertheless. The challenge will be doing that without derailing my enthusiasm for my main wargaming project!
Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act

I'm a notorious butterfly... so not setting much in. I want to get my noth American mythical beasts up together, with some generic folk horror bits, and just get more 'stuff' done for my late 1600s, AWI and starting Silver Bayonet: Canada projects. Not overly worried what 'stuff' that is, but improving the ratio of unpainted to painted is the goal lol

Also to actually sell the sales pile (its sat looking at me for months), and try not to buy any new/spinoff projects...

After a several year break (due to COVID, motivation and school schedules), I'll return to hosting games at a  convention this spring.  Details still need to be worked out, but 95 pct of figures are ready for Hannibal vs Rome.

Figures from several Kickstarters are arriving.  A Saxon/Viking project will ramp up in 2024.  I'm still uncertain if I'll round base for skirmish or square base for units, or some sort of mix.

And I have a half finished Etruscan/Italian project that will fight for painting time.

What are your plans for the coming year?

I plan to paint more miniatures.  I plan to paint more than I did this year, but then I always plan that... ::)

Everything on hold until we get some 10mm Sui or Tang Chinese figures (Tibetans easier to proxy or convert).
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

Reignite my painting mojo - sadly lacking in the past few months.

Need to achieve that before I can do any of these.

Significantly expand the number of PAINTED 20mm sci-fi miniatures for my 5 Parsec's solo RPG campaign.

Look for like minded folk in Edinburgh to lure in to being players in a tabletop sci-fi RPG .... might have to involve overcoming my lock-down induced reluctance to leave the house!!

Do more work on my 6mm Mesopotamian Early Bronze Age project.

Get on with some Gauls to give my 2mm Romans some opposition.

Try to avoid the "Oooh! Shiny!! Gotta have those!" ................... who am I kidding  o_o o_o ;D ;D lol lol

2024 is the year I end life under the lead shadow. Anything that doesn’t get finished is likely gonna get sold or binned. I’m starting 2025 with a clean slate.

Painting minis won’t end after 2025, but no more queue. Ever again. I’ll only buy what I’m directly gonna paint.

My goals are relatively simple.

1) Paint 10 miniatures per month, minimum.  As long as my yearly total is 120+, I'm happy (28mm and larger count as one miniature, while 15mm bases of infantry count as one, etc.)

2) Finish and publish Merciless (fantasy sidekick to Scrapheap) by Christams, 2024.

That's it. Oh, and attend at least 3-4 conventions this year even if it means traveling and spending some dosh.
2025 Painted Miniatures: 341
('24: 502, '23: 159, '22: 214, '21: 148, '20: 207, '19: 123, '18: 98, '17: 226, '16: 233, '15: 32, '14: 116)

1.  The last of my DAK figures and some terrain for North Africa, for 0200 Hours/ DAK Attack / Bolt Action.

2.  Finish off the Silver Bayonet miniatures and terrain I have.

3.  Paint the outstanding Blood Red Skies aircraft I have.

4.  Paint a selection of miniatures from my "for painting, not gaming" box.

5.  Try really hard to not buy anything except paint and terrain material until all of the above has been completed.

Spent last year trimming down the lead/plastic pile, so I'm mainly looking at painting the remainder of the projects - mostly 10mm armies.

1; - finish "2" Han/Three Kingdoms 10mm armies, so I have an army for my friends.

2; - develop Swordpoint list for the "Anarchy Period 1139-1153" in England - based on Capetian French/Norman. Then paint 2 useable 10mm armies for this period.

3; - work on completing a Strength and Honour "Gallic" and "Roman" army and terrain.

4; - work on completing figures and terrain for "Men from Company B" (10mm).

5; - work on complete "Early Hundred Years War French" 10mm army.

6; - finally decide what I'm going to do with the "Gear Krieg" models.

7; - (and likely most important) finish the year with more painted models (based on "1" base is "1" model), and having not purchased "too many" more models than I have gotten rid of.

That's the plan for the year, but let's remember..,......... No plan of action survives contact.....

5; -

Finish off the several projects I have and then, hopefully, start nothing new!
I have enough stuff. I can't play with it all now.

1. Play more games, I feel that the number of games I played in 2023 was lower than previous years. I stopped going to my local club after lockdown, so i have been playing at home. I have about half a dozen regular gaming buddies I either play individually or in groups, but I feel it is often down to me to organise things and real life got in the way a bit this year.

2. Only buy stuff I "need" and have an immediate/near-future use for. I have been trying to do this for a few months now, just buying small quantities of stuff as I see a use for it. The one exception was buying into the Boglanders kickstarter from Ramshackle Games, but as I saw an immediate use for nearly half the minis in the set, I let that one pass.

3. Paint any items under para 2 above as quickly as possible.

4. Sort out my collection and dispose of excess. I have armies that haven't seen the table top in more than a decade, it's either use them or move them on. Again I did make a start on this in 2023, selling on my 20mm WW2 and 28mm F&I War stuff, plus donating a load of fantasy to a school games club.

5. At least start painting Zombicide Wild West kickstarter I got in 2022! lol

6. Read and start playing the "Space Station Zero" rules I've had since the start of 2023.  This should help with paras 1 and 4 above! ;)
