Help needed: 28mm napoleonic buildings too big
« on: March 10, 2024, 07:30:26 AM »
I want to make for my 28mm FR miniatures some buildings  and or villages on 8x8 inch bases on which is also room for one battalion of infantry and one gun.
But all the buildings I see are way too big; it seems that 28mm buildings are meant for skirmish gaming. :(
Anyone a good range of buildings with a small footprint?
I have looked for 20mm buildings but what I have seen, even those are too big.

Oh, and please no American firms, postage to the Netherlands is killing!

Had similar issues myself as wanted 6”x6” appeoximate footprint for my OHW Horse & Muslet Imaginations games…solution scratchbuild…not up to the glorious standard of what we are shown on many pages of this wonderful repository of talent but it does the job…or will when it is finished!

These guys print in resin at a range of scales

I don't currently have any of their stuff, but plan shortly to get the Peninsular village in 15mm, as the quality looks good as does the price.

I am using 20mm and railway HO/OO buildings with 28mm figures and even here, one just has the choose the buildings that have the best presence for the smallest footprint.

If the buildings go too small, while the infantry might get away with it ….. the cavalry can’t, if such things actually matter.

You thought of card buildings? You can scan them (assuming they're not already in file form), tinker with the size and print whatever works best for you.

I use one size down for buildings so 20mm with 25mm, etc

Hovels buildings are designed with a reduced fooprint for their scale so take up less space than true scale buildings.

I think what Roo has done is great. Seriously reduced footprint but with enough character and detail to look good on the table and not look out of 'scale'.
cheers

I used building blanks by War Bases. They are ideal for what you are looking for and reasonably cheap and 'improvable'.

Using the size of these as a guide I started making other buildings from scratch using WB windows / shutters and doors which greatly speeded the process of building - they are also very cheap and give buildings the 'pro-built' look.

the pig sty is scratch, the building beyond is WB blanks and windows, etc.

Back in the day, I used to make all my buildings from scratch out of mounting card with post card tiled roofs but it was time consuming.

These shots give a good impression of 'village size'.

This one represents Kirschen, at Zorndorf 1758. Not too big at all.

Chotusitz, at Chotusitz 1742

This one the small hill top town of Cerignola, at Cerignloa 1503 (note, these are the same buildings I use for the Peninsular War).

These two shots give a good idea of construction using WB widows, etc. They make all the difference to the 'professional look' of the thing.

More recently, I've made my generic 'Arab' town on a much more formal plan. Some buildings are stand alone 'compounds' other sections have inbuilt streets so a town can be built up. These are 8" x 8" sections. The buildings are mostly made from 5mm foam core.

Take a look at Total Battle Miniatures.  They produce a Black Powder range of buildings in 28mm with a reduced footprint for exactly the reason you mention. Not cheap but beautiful looking models.
