Help needed for Pirate Buildings
« on: November 19, 2011, 09:59:55 PM »
I am wanting to build a pirate port for LOTHS.
I started by building a customs house
This thread.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=29423.msg353475#msg353475

I was going to use some Warhammer type buildings I have made but the more I think about it the more I don't think it isn’t right. They are too Medieval
I don’t want a fantasy town but a more realistic period town. My trouble is I don’t have a firm idea of what I do want. So I am looking for inspiration from the good people of this forum.
I am thinking the port maybe an eclectic type of place with buildings built by the different people who have controlled the place but I am worried that as a model this may not jell.
Anybody have any useful pictures of this period, late 1600 to early 1700. The town is going to be a Caribbean port.
I am looking to build a Tavern/Inn, a ship chandlers, a smithy and some other shops and houses. Can anybody help?

You can find Gary Chalk's plans for Pirate building on various sites. I would go for a Spanish look myself, Gary's are exactly that!

Thanks
I had noticed that thread before but it was a few years old, 2008.
Has anybody still got them?

The Yahoo group "Pirate Wargames" has all the Gary Chalk files, including for the port.

Gary Chalk will work but you can go other directions.  For the game I'm working on I'm creating 5 towns and trying to give each a national character - the pirate town is more of a ramshackle collection of buildings.  You did not mention a scale (or did you?) but buying buildings that fit and painting them to theme should work.

There's lots of good inspiration photos located here, and on other websites as well.

I'd try Google Images, if you run dry.

A lot of locations, even in the early 1700's weren't much more than shacks and tents, especially if you are considering New Providence, in the Bahamas.

If you are thinking of a Spanish Town, I'd go with buildings from the Spanish Napoleonic range from Grand Manner:

Or if you are looking for buildings in your first pic, contact Skrapwelder ( http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=profile;u=220 ) here at LAF.  He makes some buildings that might fig your idea...

I would dare to say that you could use your original houses, a lot of material was shipped to the new world, and I mean a lot. Its a missconception that we only reciewed stuff from over seas, massive amounts of building materials and other comodities where shipped to the new settlements. Especially stuff that where in shortage naturally, and of course stuff that required industrial work not available in the new world (yet).

However, we went for a very warhammerish style to our pirate table, and its great fun to play on, and accordingly to others it looks good. We wanted a hollywood feeling to our games and hence where not afraid of making houses that included ship parts and so forth.
I am working on a smaller settlement, wich is my "private" pirate island, and all the buildings will be in a spanish style, sort of like the Tortuga table mentioned above. That village is one of my absolute favourites of all pirate tables I have seen, really great, lots of inspirational stuff.
