Help digital maps for skirmish games
« on: March 12, 2024, 12:13:04 PM »
I hope some of you wise gentlemen can help.

Can anyone suggest a SIMPLE means of creating digital maps for skirmish gaming? I am not looking for anything interactive, just a way of creating a map that I can print off, or email to players.

MS Word?
Or what about drawing it with pen and paper, then scan it, and email it to them?

An acquaintance uses Inkarnate.

They have the paid for version, I believe, but there is also a free one. I'm unsure what features are missing on the free one.

I use PowerPoint, but it is not easy.

Possibly GIMP, but that is not easy to learn either.

Are you looking for maps to "use" digitally, or just print?  If printing, how detailed/deluxe are you looking for?  You can find a lot of digital D&D maps which are intended for online digital tabletops (like Owlbear Rodeo, etc.).

When I need to create a map, I too use MS Paint.  I save them as jpeg images.  You can email it as an image, and import it into a MS Word doc, as well.  You can even email ti to your phone, and text it as an attachment!

There is Hexographer - https://www.hexographer.com/free-version/, but it may be too zoomed out for skirmish games.

I picked it up in a Bundle of Holding, but, I have to admit, I haven't done much more than install it.

There's Campaign Cartographer, but it is definitely not in the "simple" category :(

In the free paint program category, Krita is also available - https://krita.org/en/

I also use powerpoint.

I don't know what level of awesomeness you are aiming for, but basic stuff isn't too difficult.

For this What a Cowboy campaign map I just used basic shapes and a standard background.

For this Chain of Command map I included some fancy vegetation (free transparent background png images), but you can also use the standard available "thinking cloud" shape and fill it with a green colour to indicate trees or bushes.

I'd recommend having a look at Paint.NET. I find it a lot easier than GIMP or Photoshop - it's essentially MS Paint with the ability to add layers, which saves a lot of headaches when finetuning an image!

I am a mapdrawing failure....I found it easier to build the table first, take a photo and paste it into powerpoint. Voila, map done  :D

If you're doing fantasy gaming, Dungeondraft is really solid.
