Precolombian Otomies warriors
« on: May 04, 2024, 06:26:09 PM »
The Otomis (exonym of Nahuatl origin) are an ethno-linguistic group from central Mexico, whose antiquity is generally recognized. Having never possessed a writing system and having left no archaeological sites, the Otomi have aroused little interest from specialists in Mesoamerica.
Therefore little information. However, I will try to tell you a little more.
In the Precombian era two large groups existed.
The first is on the edge of Tlaxcaltec territory.
The second is on the edge of Huaxtec (Teenek) territory.
For the Tlaxcaltecs, the Otomies are brutes without culture, idiots.
For the Mexica, they embody bravery and ferocity. Moreover, they gave the name Otomie to an elite military order.
The group close to the Teenecks was attacked by the Mexica and subjected to taxation.
To avoid being in danger from the Mexicas, many migrated to the Tarascans.
They accepted willingly because the Otomies would henceforth form a natural defense against the Mexicas. In addition, this allowed the Tarascan to be warned of an attack by the Mexica and to prepare accordingly.
For the Tlaxcaltec they employed them as mercenaries.
Moreover, the first "Aztec" army which fought the Spanish of Cortes was an Otomies army sent by the Tlaxcalans.
do not yet have any information on the Otomies allied with the Tlaxcaltec.
So I'm going to tell you about the Otomies allied to the Teenek.

The Otomies are distinguished by their haircut.
They shaved the forehead and sides, but on the backs of their heads they left much long hair.
Their practice painting the face (red, black) or tatooed on the skin in green (turquoise green).

I have not found any traces of cotton or feather costumes from this period.
The elites wore animal skins and cotton armor (like the Aztecs)

Good evening,
I will start with the Atl-Atl.
1 warrior with blue/green grid-shaped tattoos and the characteristic haircut...
1 elite warrior or noble with a face painted yellow and squared with red (Mendoza codex). The hair has on top the "famous stone column": Temilotl (if the spelling is correct) and feathers which mark feats of arms or special abilities (example: excellent marksman). Unfortunately I did not find more information on the number, color and exact value of these feathers (Otomie codex of Huichapan).)

Good evening,
Here are the archers. The bow was omnipresent in Otomies culture. Of course for hunting, but also for warfare.
In fact, the Tlaxcaltec were influenced by the Otomies and made the bow a compulsory weapon in their armies.
The second photo shows a clan chief covered in black paint, except for his face, which is yellow with red stripes. The feathers are also present to indicate the quality of the warrior or his ‘noble’ origins.

Good evening,
Thank's for all .

Here are some warriors armed with close combat weapons.
Among them is an elite warrior recognisable by his coyote skin.

The figures are from Gringo 40 and Lucid eye.

Good evening,
Here are some noblemen in their cotton ‘cotte’.
One of them is wearing a coyote skin. He's probably a great warrior or a great nobleman.
Another is carrying a long macuahuitl like a big axe.
No matter where these warriors lived, on the Tlaxcalla side or the Teenek side, both tribes wore the same outfits.

Hello,

Here are two nobles.
The banner bearer is dressed in coyote skins
The banner is taken from a codex.
The nobleman in jaguar skin is the clan chief (like the Aztec Tlatoani).

The warrior's name appears on the shield:
Rabbit and jaguar .
The hair is always cut short but there is always a "knot" at the top of the head.
