A Quest for Heroes..... a Heroquest!
« on: May 28, 2024, 05:08:47 PM »
Greetings all,

For Christmas, I got a nice, shiny, new Heroquest core set.  In theory, I could have opened it up and started playing it that morning.  However, I put two restrictions in myself as soon as I opened it up.

1. No playing it until it was ALL painted.

2. No expansions until Core Set was done

Sadly, I could not get to painting them right away, as I was still finishing up my Battle of Kadesh project.

However, with all being done, it was time to jump in and work on my Heroquest Core Set. I am documenting is all on the Blood and Spectacles blog as I power through the painting process.  I will mostly be using Army Painter Speedpaints v1.0, Armypaint Washes, and Armypainter regular line.  For prime I use Grey Seer from GW, and my Matte coat is a Krylon spray.  There are a few departures, but when I use something different I call it out on the blog.

For some odd reason, I started my painting journey with the Heroes!  Normally, that is not the approach I would taking, saving them for last.  In addition, I painted them all 1-at-a-time.  Again, not my normal approach at all.  For the minions, I got back to batch painting them in a group, but even then I tried to make them all individuals, but with a common theme.

That is the results after my first couple sessions with the Core Set.  I was impressed by the models.  They were way better than some Hellboy Board Game pieces I had painted early last year.  In fact, I enjoyed painting them better than some Wizkids or Reaper Bones models.  I will probably use these for D&D minis as well as Heroquest.  The material is solid and the detail is mostly good.  They take well to speed painting.

Have you painted up your Heroquest models?  Feel free to share them here.  Let's go on this quest together!

Hey, that's still going to arrive some time...some time.

Nice work there, good to hear what the minis are like as well. Any chance of close ups of your paintjobs? I'm looking forward to seeing the rest as well.

My camera is not that good at close-ups.  I try to get a bit closer on a few shots on my blog though.

I got a good start painting up the Heroes, the Dread Warlock, and the Goblins, but there is still a lot of miniatures to go.  I had decided to start with the forces of Dread and the Greenskins first.  Here was my progress so far...

Not a bad start, but there are still a lot of miniatures to paint.  Almost a daunting amount.  It took me a few weeks, but I eventually got all the Dread forces, Orcs, and Undead finished up.  I mostly used ARmy Painter Speedpaint 1.0, Armypainter Washes and basic Armypainter paints for a few touch-ups here and there.

I ended up with the set looking like this....

That is the Heroquest Core Boxed set miniatures done.  Now it is onto the furniture.  Noting like painting some doors to get the heart pounding!

If you want to know more about how I painted any particular model, some close-ups, and group shots you can find them on the Blood and Spectacles blog here: https://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2024/06/on-painting-desk-back-on-quest.html

Now, it was time to move onto the less interesting pieces.  Furniture and doors.  I won't lie, it was tough to get started on these.  I mean, how excited could I get about painting a chest, a stone archway, or a desk?  Well, I girded my loins and got to work.  After all, this was a quest for HEROES not lesser beings.

Then I also did all the doors.  That let me take a look at what it looked like when it all came together!

You can read and see all the gory details of the process on my blog, IF that is your thing.

With the Core Set done, I went and got the Against the Ogres expansion.  Review and painting coming soon.  I decided on that one first because I wanted to add the ranged enemies.

Hoping to get this on the table soon, and will post the updates here as well.

The furniture turned out pretty well! I think it adds a lot of visual interest to have the furniture painted- not much other scenery on the game board, after all.

Yeah, I like that furniture too. Is the stairs also just a cardboard cutout for this newer version or is that from the old HQ? I would have thought they could have easily made a 3d version of that.

Like you, I have a similar OCD regarding playing my own copies of board games. I play anyone else's in whatever grey plastic they may come, but my own HAS to be painted before gaming!

I have purchased Ares Games Sword & Sorcery and Chronicles of Druganor this year so guess what has to be painted  o_o.

Nice start and I also use Armypainter Speedpaints 2.0 because it gets the job done.

Nope, event he new one still uses just a tile.

Since the core set is done, I have picked up my first expansion.  I chose Against the Ogres because I wanted the ranged attacker rules.  That seemed like a decent change up to the original game.

You can read my review of it here:

That set looks cool. It looks like they've kept the original floor tile artwork too, mostly nostalgia I guess.

Wow, the character Ogres in this Against the Ogres box are huge!

This set is taking me much longer to paint than I expected!
