Build-a-thon Summer 2024.
« on: 16 August 2024, 09:55:31 AM »
I know I'm not the only one with decades worth of models not built, either still in the blister (do they make those any more?), on the sprue or clipped off and in a bits box ready to one day be put together. A few months back I decided it was time to stop having space taken up by useless bits and time to start building everything I possibly can so I can use it on the table. A built model with mold lines you can clean up later is better than an unbuilt model you can't do anything with is my philosophy. I put together a full Chaos dwarf army I've had sitting in storage for almost 30 years now this week. No cost, just a few hours effort and I got a complete new army!

So would any one else want to join in and build as many models as you can between now and Christmas (when we will get more..). We have group painting threads, so a group building thread seems a nice change and we get new (old) toys to play with.

I got tired of building models. I find they never look quite right when I do it the edges never match up and I end up with fingers stuck together with super glue. I started buying 3D printed stuff instead. Still I like your idea and would love to see your progress....

I think it's a good idea, although I hate building plastic. Atm I'm cleaning up moldlines form mostly i-piece metal models, ready to prime and stick on bases. Got boxes full of bare metals with/without blister and it takes up too much space so yeah, several metals cleaned each evening would help a lot.

Even if all you're doing is clipping off flash and gluing it to the base it's playable. I clean models I care about and don't ones I don't. It's whatever works!

You can build 3D printed stuff too. I've been putting together some 3D printed models I put in a box and forgot about!

Sounds a good idea.  Might motivate me to build and maybe paint a number of boxes full of plastic figures:
Wargames Factory (Amazons & Germanic warriors), Frostgrave (Soldiers x2, Cultists x2) Wargames Atlantic (Romans) & Warlord Games (Romans) and ...
'He could have lived a risk-free, moneyed life, but he preferred to whittle away his fortune on warfare.'

I can reach into the mountain and pull out metal/plastic/resin of many different kinds.

Work projects are finally progressed that I might have some me time this side of this xmas and I keep thinking - do something, oh hang on reality here, do this.

I like the idea and hey it might push me to have something put on a table in colour for the first time in far too long.

TLDR;
Sounds like a good idea

Good idea but does 1 big one count instead? Had a toy hovercraft sat in a box for years that I'd started to turn into a sci-fi apc/patrol vehicle and done nothing with for quite some time. Finally got motivated to finish converting it and actually managed to start painting it! It's about 8" long, about 3" high and about 3.5" wide so quite large - it'll be good when it's finally finished.

Anyway, I'll participate with multipart metals ( probably mostly bigger guys & monsters ) as I didn't buy those over the years to remain in boxes  8).

I love building minis and have A LOOOOOOOT that I could get on with as part of a challenge.

The problem is they will then sit unpainted along with the many other assembled but unpainted models I have  lol

Started!  Built and coverted a box full of Wargames Factory Germanic Warriors that have been lying about for decades.

I'm in - being in Canada means that I struggle to prime stuff in winter, so will mostly be doing my usual late summer/fall thing of prepping/priming models ready for painting anyway. Current target is to get all my AWI metals prepped; bonus points if I build the 5 boxes of Perry plastics (but these I can do when it's -20degC outside :) )

Interesting I never thought about it but that can be a real problem. I live in NY and when it gets cold I'm lucky enough to do my priming in the giant garage we have at work where we park our 18 wheelers.

Here in Bonnie Scotland we have unpredictable weather and regardless of the calendar month we can have 3 or 4 different seasons and a half dozen weather patterns by lunchtime.
If I can see the hills across the valley it is going to rain.  If I cannot it is raining.

I don't believe it ever stops raining..

Two nights worth of work here. Some Perry war of the roses dudes and Deus Vult something or others by fireforge. Basically some lightly armoured knights where the horses need a bunch of putty (you can see them in the background).

The other 6 guys are possessed Elves from Kings of war. Bloody huge dudes with lots of spikes on their weapons. They don't really fit any army I play because Mantic redesigned Dark elves into... something. Which is nice but One page rules hasn't added them to the dark elf list and I don't play Twilight kin in KoW. Really cheap buy and they will sub in for evil ogres or trolls, the usual soft of big guys.

Please excuse the crappy photos. My desk is a complete pig sty right now and I've not got the space to take a proper photo. Once I've put magnets on the bottom of these guys they'll be off to storage and more space will be made!

Good start Robosmith. I'll be glueing and priming this weekend and will post the rust afterwards.  :)

Edit: so far 2 giants built, will see if I can finish more big fellows. Anyway, progress has been made  :)
