Thon the Game
« on: 08 November 2012, 06:48:30 AM »
...or possibly it's THON the Game. Anyhow, spotted this under-construction minis thingy cum RPG over at BoW:
http://www.thonthegame.com/index.html
http://www.facebook.com/ThonTheGame

Couldn't at a glance figure out much anything about who's making it, but they are planning for early 2013 release and fairly predictably also have a KickStarter in the works.

Looks to be aiming a noch from Warhammer 40.000 towards the high tech futuristic games like Battle for Alabaster in terms of aesthetics. Mechanics-wise, the minis game is reportedly more @ Infinity than at Wh40k, apparently with named personality commanders who get and give boosts in the WARMACHINE vein. The minis scale is given as 28mm.

Don't really need a new game any more than I need an extra hole in the head, but if they come up with pretty toy soldiers then I may well get some of those 8)

Don't need to get into any games, but I have zero complaints about more minis being available.  I like the big armour suited guy...looks a bit "too" 40K though.

This looks quite interesting, some of the models do have a 40k vibe, but thats fine with me.

Big armored guy caught my attention. Seemed more techy than dark gothic - not enuff skullz. Like you, I don't need another game but I'm always interested in cool minis.

The imagery is really nice...but there is no congruity between the sculpts and the artwork. The models just look a bit too clunky IMO. But I'll wait and see where this is heading.

The design is amazing, simple and realistic. I love it, and i'll follow it at my best.

Some preproduction(?) models, but actual models all the same and not just CADs:
http://www.beastsofwar.com/thon/defense-units-fireborn-world-thon/

I like the ADU and the wee DRX a lot. Fireborn is a little too future gothic for me.

The KickStarter for this looks to be approaching, the main site mentions "cutting the KS video".

Thanks for the update. I don't mind the vaguely Gothic Fireborn armor. It's the GQ pose that turns me off. They're army men, for heaven's sake. They should be shooting, running, ducking, ordering/warning... not flexing like some Hilfiger advert.

I'm really digging a lot of the sculpts, and the artwork.  Many of the models would make excellent conversions for all sorts of stuff (I won't be starting a new game anytime soon).  I'm very interested in plenty of the models already.  Seems like a nice fresh mix of Warhammer/Star Wars...but a bit more realistic.  Lookin' good.

I know a lot of people will find a use for the cool little ARC droids or whatever they are.  Keep up the good work.

PS: The only thing I will "poopoo" is the names of the factions etc.  Slightly too artsy, with no easy proper pronunciation in English.  That's always a little awkward when gamers are all calling their armies different things. :D

Incidentally, does anyone actually know who is making this yet and where they're at? I haven't figured that out just by looking at their site and haven't been able to be bothered to actually dig for info ???

The umpteenth S-F game that is just a stylistic variant of 40K, it's just the same pseudo medieval/gothic, pseudo-religious, guys in big armour that refuse to wear helmets and carry big sticks rather than guns type affair.  And "the only good gun has a two inch barrel and a minimum of caliber of 50mm" Just more of the same, only marginally different.  It's a hymn to our consistent collective ability to innovate more of the same.

I wish people would be able to forget that 40K exists and do something truly original rather than just rehash the same tropes by merely tweaking the variables, but never coming up with something I haven't seen before.

Ditto with Gates of Antares, it looked promising for about five minutes and then it was back to the same old.
