6mm Jacobites
« on: 20 August 2024, 03:07:19 AM »
Making progress on my 6mm Jacobite army for Killiecrankie. I still need 2-3 more highlander bases and Purcell's Irish infantry battalion. After that I will tackle Mackay's government army. The two command stands depict Bonnie Dundee and Cameron of Lochiel (who was supposedly fairly armored at the battle). The red-coated cavalry of Dundee's followers from the Royal Regiment of Horse. All the figures are Baccus and are based for Liber Militum Tercios.

Great work - nice and bright, whilst still being realistic.

Very nice. I'm currently building a Williamite Wars project using Pendraken 10mm figures but you may have persuaded me into a Killiecrankie diversion sometime later.

Those look great, really nicely painted and based.
Liber Militum Tercios is an excellent set of rules.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Both the late 17th century and the Jacobite uprisings are things that have piqued my wargaming interest for decades. I started projects for both in 10, 15 and 28mm with limited success (I've abandoned them all except for incomplete collections of 10mm late 17th century and a small 15mm project for the '45).

I decided I could scratch both itches with a 6mm project for Killiecrankie and then use alot of those units also for the 1685 Argyll Uprising (and perhaps even Monmouth's rebellion).

Tercios is designed with TYW/ECW in mind but I think they could easily handle late 16th century and late 17th century without issue. I think their sweet spot is dealing with about 9-12 units per side...which means Killiecrankie and hypothetical battles of the 1685 uprising would be a good fit.

I will update this thread as I add more painted units to the project. I'm currently working on Purcell's Irish at the moment...

Managed to finish up the Jacobites for the Killiecrankie project, here are some pictures of the most recently painted bases and the army in its entirety:

Purcell's Irish

Additionally Highlander units (Clanranald center and Camerons on the right)

The entire little army (7 bases of infantry, 2 cavalry detachments and 2 commanders)

Next up will be Mackay's government army. More pictures and info here: https://lecoqfou.blogspot.com/2024/09/jacobites-completed.html?m=1

Those bases are lovely, you are putting together a great looking set.

We use Tercios with up to 30 or so units per side without any problem. By not increasing the number of order chits according to the larger armies you immediately remove the "gamey" ability for any unit to do exactly what it needs to do, exactly when it needs to do it. Plus forcing commanders to move around the battle to individually keep units active or to rally, which also gives more value to the Commanders traits and abilities.
I have 6mm ECW based for Tercios but mainly use them for 15mm Italian Wars battles with a playtest variant that el Kraken were working on but never released.

Robh, thanks for the kind words. I'm a big fan of your Italian Wars armies (especially since I am a fan of the Mikes Models figures).

How many order chits/cards do you include for your armies? I've always given each unit in the army an order card. Providing a finite amount of orders would be a good way to create more command and control challenges for the general but how do you handle reactions if the unit doesn't have an order card? I'm very interested!

Very natty. Given the tiny size of the figures, the painting works really well  :)

Plaid would have been a stretch!  ;) lol

Haha. Don't think I wasn't tempted! I've begun various Jacobite projects in 28mm, 15mm and 10mm and abandoned them because of the tedious nature of painting plaid. Only in 6mm, did I feel comfortable to dispense with the need to paint it on tartan. I can tell myself at that scale /distance you probably wouldn't have seen it.

I still remember painting a 15mm Spanish force for the Spanish American War, in order to replicate the rayadillo uniform, I was painting tiny little lines of blue and white. Someone correctly pointed out that, at that scale, it would probably just look like a pale blue grey and you wouldn't notice the lines. I wish I realized that much earlier in the project!

I use the original card decks (12 Resist, 12 Assault, 14 Ready, 14 Fire and 20 Run) although replaced with much smaller coloured chits as I think the cards themselves are too large and ugly on the table. 1 full deck per army.
There was a good discussion on the sadly defunct Kraken forum about changing the ratio of order types or individually customising decks to suit different armies and commanders, akin to the wonderful system in the Piquet rules.

With more units than orders you end up having to give some units orders that are not strictly applicable which works as a delay or confusion event. (All units must have an order)
The reaction activation is the one that causes the most difficulty for the player/commander, do you play dominant and order your unit as you want or passive and play to best react to what you think the enemy will do. A genuine command decision  ;)

Thanks for the comment on my MM guys, about time you got yours out of that old shoebox. Coming up around their 40th birthday, should be well matured by now.
