1/72nd star wars kitset figures - measurements needed please
« on: 16 September 2024, 08:24:20 PM »
Hi all I have recently started collecting 1/72nd scale figures for a SW game. My plan is to use a combination of 3d prints and plastic toy soldiers (as proxies) to make an OT era game or two.

By some miracle does anyone own the AMT cantina kitset?
http://www.starwarsmodels.com/cantina.html

And if you do own a set could you please measure the height to top of head of these figures.

I plan on picking up 1 or 2 sets of this to use the figures for scatter terrain and it will give a figure to match my 3d print and toy soldier to.

I have some micro machine figures that I could use but they are mainly 21mm and the sculpts are not as good as what can be printed these days.

Cheers!

It is pretty rare these days, apparently there is also a Jabba's palace.  I made a cartoony one for my 15mm Star Wars project.

Nice build oldben1 looks great.

I was thinking of using the figures from the kit as a basis for sizing any printing or purchasing I do.

I'm thinking a 23mm tall figure would suit  - there's enough options out there for proxy figures without getting too big.  But I'm going to wait and see when or if I can buy this kitset or get measurements

This YouTube video sort of reviews the kit

The Obi-wan model  in the hand gives you a clue as to the figure size, from that you can start to figure out the bar size. To me it looks a little on the small size, but everyone's mileage will vary.

There are a few sites reviewing or discussing this kit. At least one that I saw discussed augmenting the figures with micromachines figures and, in subsequent pictures, you can't really tell the difference in height. That should give some idea of figure height, I should've thought?

Thanks Merlon and Rick that's a useful review.  Starwars models. com has pics of the kit with micromachine figures and yeah they are pretty close

However when you put a 1/72 scale fig next to a micromachine figure (roughly 1/87th) the difference can get....uncomforable? if you're a bit OCD about scale :)

I'm trying to get close (within 1mm or so) to this size with any printing and toy soldiers I buy so i can blend them in as background figures.  It looks like a great way to make a table look star warsy

I'll keep looking and post anything I find

Also worth bearing in mind that kits marketed as being 1/72nd are rarely that! Most military kits are, in actual fact, 1/76th and sci-fi kits can vary from 1/87 to 1/76 (or so) but are very rarely, in my experience, actual 1/72. Best to find a figure and match the height rather than going by what the manufacturer says is the scale.

I don't have measurements for the Cantina kit.  However, if 1/72 scale is your aim I'd give a look at two toy lines.

1) Micro Machines "Action Fleet" vehicles and playsets that were released in the 90's and early 2000s.   Though regular micro machine vehicles were much too small, the "Action Fleet" vehicles are much closer to scale and the figure packs (if you can still find them) are closer to 1/72.  Also, there were some good playsets produced that may have value in conversion into terrain.

2) "Micro Galaxy Squadron" toys that are currently available today.   A smidge over 20mm with the figures being closer to 23mm.  However the quality of the vehicles in terms of detail, proportion and not sacrificing realism for play features (Missile launchers, etc) is really quite impressive.  Lacking however is playsets and "regular" (non-driver) figures.

Though both lines have a majority of spacecraft, and are somewhat flexible in scale, both have some ground vehicles that are well scaled for 20mm amd both are available affordably as well.

Yup 100% agree Rick you're right they do seem to be closer to 1/76th.  The Plastic toy solider review page has height indication for figures and I plan on using some of these for proxies.
 cheers!

Thanks for the recommendations Eilif. I'm tempted to pick up the imperial troop transport; nice vehicle to field and a couple of stormtroopers that I guess I could repose and put on bases.

The action fleet escape pod, dewback, skiff would definitely be worth picking when I can get them cheers!

My son has the transport.  I can measure it for you if you'd like.

Will do tonight. I don't think I have one, but you might want to look at the Micro Galaxy AT-ST also.

Got some ground vehicle measurements for you.

Micro Galaxy Squadron

Imperial Troop Transport 6" long
AT-TE 8" Hull length

Micro Machines "Action Fleet"

Snowspeeder 4" not including gun barrel.
At-AT 4.5" tall
Escape Pod 4" Tall
Dewback 3.75" nose to tail.
Dune Sea Skiff 4.5" long
Bespin Cloud Car 3.5 " long

Let me know if you need any spacecraft measurement.

Somewhere I have both kinds of Tattoine land speeders.  If I find them I'll measure them as well.

The Action Fleet models vary in scale, however - some are about right and some are way off. There is a site which lists the actual scale by measuring the model and comparing it to the published dimensions, I'll see if I can find it.
