Metallic white paint
« on: 14 October 2024, 10:41:39 AM »
Hi, has anybody achieved a metallic or pearlescent effect with white acrylic paint ? I am painting the figure in the picture attached and I am trying to capture the shiny white effect. To be honest the picture does not do it justice and its a lot more metallic/pearlescent than it looks.
I am using a proper Titanium white and intend on blending in some pearlescent Lumiere paint to achieve the effect and was wondering if anybody has given this go and with what results ?
I am guessing the blue haze on some of the white in the picture is from somebody dry brushing the black with blue ? Unless its a wash ?

I haven't done any pealescent effect myself, but I have tried to create metallic colours, by mixing metallic paints (silver) with the colour of choice. But this resulted in a dulling down of the colour, even though the metallic effect did work as expected. I experienced this effect in both acrylic and enamel based paints.

So a bright red and silver became a dark red metallic...

I do know that there are several products on the market that can be used as a wash over an existing colour, and I'm fairly certain that a pearlescent effect is among the offerings.

Alternatively, you could (since it's a metal mini) think about getting white pearlescent nailpolish and use that. Don't use it on plastics though, as it'll probably melt the mini ;)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

I remember there used to be an Armory Colour (yes, I am that old...) called Spider Web that did just this. Failing that, you can try something similar using pure metallic medium

You could check out some art supply acrylics, I know several brands in the shops here include pearlescent or iridescent paints in their lines. You could mix them in, or possibly just use the iridescent/pearlescent paint as a highlight on white.

Monuments pro Acryl range has an excellent white that’ll probably get you close but if not they also (as do others) produce a metallic medium you can mix with other colours. I think if you used a good quality white (I am biased towards pro Acryl because they are what I now use and amazing, I also use Vallejo and very old GWs) and if you used the Pro Acryl glaze and wash medium you’d be able to replicate that bright, smooth white very easily. The G&W medium is witchcraft and should be in all painters quivers (not the right word but I like the imagery).

Metallic medium is basically white pearl. I used to mix it with various ink & paint colors when painting a Slaanesh army back in the day. Lots of pearly pink, purple, & blues plate armor on the Champions. Also straight Metallic medium is a great hi-lite color for any light/bright metallic color not just silver based ones.
