Acrylic metallic paint...
« on: February 15, 2023, 04:20:58 PM »
I'm after some metallic paints, for a couple of robots I'm on with. I'd prefer Vallejo ideally, but who makes the best? I'm after metallic red, blue, green and yellow. Any advice would be muchly appreciated.

Vallejo's basic acrylic metallics I find pretty poor - AK's are much nicer.  I like ProAcryl, and find Vallejo "Metal Colour' (which I think are airbrush paints but they brush on okay) pretty excellent.

I’ve found an ink wash over silver gives a very good effect.  Windsor and Newton inks are what I use

Vallejo Metal Air, especially the silvers, are fantastic.

The silvers are fairly similar as well, so I tend to favour either end of the spectrum most.

They contain Aluminium powder rather than mica flakes in order to give a reflective shine, and I personally prefer working with them as they are less goopy and give a finer more convincing finish. They're not "Chrome pen" bright, but are the next best.  :)

Be warned though, they taste awful!

My favourite Vallejo Metal Air(?) is Exhaust Manifold...has a lovely burned/dirty kind of metal finish.  I use it all the time.  I do find I have to mix it with my brush before brushing it on though as it'll separate pretty quick on my palette.

Harry a tip I picked up over half a century ago (before most
metallic paints were available) is...
Nail Varnish !!!!!

A friend at school (well I was still a school boy at the time) produced
a Byzantine General with impressive sparkling armour.
'Nail varnish' he told us.
'Nicked from your big sister?' we asked.
'No, I just went to the make-up counter at Boots'
Believe me 11 year old school boys just didn't do that sort of thing in 1966.  lol lol lol
