Acrylic spray paint for priming resin/3D prints? Experience?
« on: February 19, 2025, 01:54:44 AM »
Have a manufacturer recommendation to use acrylic spray paint as a primer on resin product.

So, what experience have folks had using acrylic spray paint?  On resin and as a primer?  And is workable for 3D prints from varied sources?

I see it available at a local art supply store at a bit of a premium price, a couple to a few dollars more per can than typical rattle can spray paint.

I'm guessing I've used some before in the form of Montana paints, very thick in comparison to other spray paints if it was, indeed, acrylic.

Thanks for any input.

I use standard stuff from the hardware store - Rustoleum or others. I've never had an issue with 3D prints not taking them (or doing strange things like some PVC plastics do)

For black, I use Krylon Fusion Acrylic Matte Black. I've never had a problem with it priming resin, 3-D print, etc. It is my go-to and available both in craft stores and home improvement stores.

I airbrush prime EVERYTHING with Vallejo primers. It’s fantastic. I’ve even used it on goalie masks - and it won’t de-bond!

If I may, the manufacturer made a positive statement to the effect any solvent based spray paint would ruin the model and therefore an acrylic spray paint was essential: if using spray paint.  My go to is almost always spray paint for priming.  I continue the hunt...

Army Painter canned primers are water based acrylic so should suit your needs.  I used them for a while when my airbrush kit was in storage prior to a house move.  They are pretty good, but I prefer the controllability of airbrushing so never continued with them.

Pedants point (sorry, not your fault, just a lazy manufacturer comment)…..all paint is solvent based, it’s just that sometimes the solvent is water…..if it wasn’t, it would come out of the nozzle as dust…..

But if a head scratch on this one.  Did he use some funky type of resin?  I am asking as I have been spraying 3d prints with regular auto primer for a while now and never had an issue.  The acrylic spray paints work but without a real primer they may run into the same issue as regular acrylics on metal miniatures.  It can rub off.  If you are that worried, you might just go with paint on guesso.

Rust-oleum matt primer, acetone based, no problems with anything - metal, hard-plastic, or resin.  The only thing I don't use it on is XPS foam (then Army Painter Terrain spray)
